I think I'd like to add one of these to the garage just to take the bite out of the air in winter when working on the bikes or car. Any recommendations on brands? There seem to be a lot of mixed reviews on most all, but I think it's people expecting them to heat an outdoor space or raise the temp of an entire room.

I find mine really weird. You feel warm when near it, but you really arent! I have a really cheap one from the supermarket, the plus is that they are really cheap to run.

I'm pretty sure this is the brand I have:

http://www.radiantsystemsinc.com/

They are sold by my local power supply company. They are very popular in all electric homes in my area and I ended up using a pair to heat the third stall of my garage.

My third stall is an addition done by a previous owner so there is an 18' partial dividing wall between it and the original two car. There is a Reznor NG forced air heater in the two stall side that is directed at the 7' opening between the stalls. It does a good job of heating the third stall but I eventually plan to built a sliding partition between the two sides so I'll want a bit of supplement heat in the third stall, hence the use of the cove heaters.

I hope that makes sense. I haven't built the sliding partition yet but I think the cove heaters will do a decent job. I'm not sure they'd be my first choice if I didn't already have that Reznor.

At any rate, if you need more details or clarification post back and I'll write more after I've had my coffee, lol.

You have to aim them.
Think of aiming a floodlight at your work spot.
IR follows the same rules as light.
So you can have a "heat shadow" if something is in the way.

And you can be warm when it is cold.
Just like you can feel warm on a bright, sunny but below freezing day.

I have a Mr Heater Ng infrared heater in my garage. I've been really happy with it since the day I installed it.

The main key to any heater working well is making sure the space is insulated.

I installed mine on the back wall and put the thermostat on the side of the garage by the man door. In the winter it's like I'm working in my living room.

There are different types of these heaters. Some are radiant and some are infrared heating.

One will put out direct heat and one will heat the items in the room instead of just heating the air directly in front of the heater.

I have a 3 burner radiant heater in my basement (28x32) and the walls and doors are well insulated. I also have a fan on top of it blowing the heat out into the room. It does get cold here from time to time (below zero or zero) and I can work down there in short sleeves after the heat has been on for an hour or so.

Makes sense. what size are the heaters you are using for that space?

I have two, 750 watt heaters directed down the length of my 17' x 25' shop. That's less than the recommended wattage for an area that size but in most cases I'll have the area heated with forced air heat before shutting the door and relying on the radiant heaters.
