My neighbor who is a plumber tells me this is a 'carrier'.

Internet search 'plumbing carrier' leads me to carriers associated with wall mounted urinals and toilets.

I am just installing a wall-mounted faucet in the garage.

What is the proper name for this?

"carrier"

It is a piece in the wall to support the faucet or whatever.

It is always an argument over weather it is a plumber or carpenter responsibility to install.

i believe they call that a shelf back faucet. carrier is usually the fitting to install a wall mounted w.c, some urinals and certain lavatory sinks supported by wall mounted arms and not the wall. boards in the wall are generally called backer boards
