So I'm picking this metal cabinet up this weekend, I spotted it on c'list. Its a cabinet for flammable liquids...the owner says its something like 4ft by 4ft. I'd like to get it up off the ground and was thinking of hanging it on the wall. Might be a bit ridiculous if it is 4ft tall, but any ideas on hanging it without worrying that its going to come tumbling down?

Usually, those fire cabs are much heavier. How 'bout makin' a full length cab with the fire cab being the top part. That way, you can consolidate storage.

Something like that could get very heavy, certainly over 100 lbs with flammable liquids inside. I don't trust lags for that kind of load

I'm with JC23. You need to place it on top of something strong, a bench, another cabinet or build a frame of some kind that transfers the load to the floor.

If you really want to "hang it on the wall", screw a 2x4 into the studs (At least 2 4" screws per stud. You want to hit 4 studs.) and then place the bottom edge of the cabinet on top of the that 2x4. Then from inside the cabinet run a couple more 4" screws into the studs.

To carry the weight, add a piece of steel or even something like a 1x3 on the inside top and bottom. Then use large washers and 1/4' or 3/8" lags into the studs. Two at the top and two at the bottom will hold it.

All the suggestions above are good. Just a FYI those cabinets weigh close to 100 pounds empty. You may want to keep in mind that they need to be vented to the outside if you want to use them correctly. That cabinet is not OSHA compliant as it does not have a automatic door closer.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I thought it might be much to hang on the wall. When I get it and see just how big it is, I'll look at building a cabinet for it to sit on. I've got some hard to use space behind where my door opens, usually just brooms and what not go there. Might be a good corner to tuck it in, plus more storage underneath.
