We built this Wall Organizer Cabinet / Workstation for a specific customer application but after building it the guys thought it might make sense as a new product we could offer?

I am asking the Garage Journal crew what you think?

The idea is that people might like a wall cabinet that has the following attributes:
  • Lockable
  • Full of Bins
  • Heavy Duty
  • Has a Flip Down Work Tray Which is Out of the Way When not in Use
  • Looks Decent

(The post sticking out the front side probably would not be offered on the standard product, that post is for the specific application this customer asked for)

The overall dimensions when closed are: 8 Wide x 17 Tall x 7 Deep. The work tray is: 17-3/4 Wide x 1 Tall x 17 Deep. There are 16 bins that are each: 2-1/8 Wide x 3-1/2 Tall x 4-1/4 Deep.

What do you think? Is this something worth pursuing? How would you improve it?

If you'd like to see more photos or learn more about the specifics of this wall cabinet, please click here.

Thanks!

nice how much would something like that run $

Hi Jeremy,

The custom one we built was priced at $220, but since we've built it now we could do the same one for about $200, if it had the same dimensions.

Do you think something like this Wall Organizer / Work Station makes sense for your needs?

I'd be curious to know what you would use it for?

Thanks!

I have been looking for something very similar.

I would prefer a more substantial work surface, but I realize what you have is what most other people have; meaning I have seen products very similar to this.

It would be nice if you could make it modular (the shelves) to some degree. That would separate this from other identical products on the market. I might like 1 flat shelf and 1 row of bins. Below is a link to a similar product from Griots Garage in PC Steel. It might be nice to have Fe and Al as options. You could also add optional lights and outlet receptacles on the inside. All as options though. The problem is I have seen a lot of products similar to the one below and none were quite right. If you had a nice platform ,in 2 cabinet depths, and maybe 2-3 length-width profiles, and then a bunch of modular options, you would stand out.

FYI; I want to have an electrical workstation in a product like this and that may drive some of what I said. So I would want bins for components and shelves for stuff like a soldering iron, and, maybe even a drawer or two.

I like it. I'd suggest you make it with fewer dividers within, and make them moveable/slide-able so the customer could configure it for his own purposes. The external hanger device could be offered as an add-on. I'd suggest on the front or side/both sides. Nice piece.

Small parts cabinet I had some trays on the end of my rolling bench but the kids kept getting into them so I mounted them on the wall instead. One addition u could make not sure how hard it would be is to make the dividers removable like pull out plates in the slots for customization.

I think you would have a bigger market for a hobbyist toolbox/work station, with the door as a work surface, and lined with a hardwood faced plywood. Places for tools and maybe a few storage compartments. The door would need something to support it when down so the box does not tip over. (Maybe a hasp could be selected to accomplish that? :dunno: )

Hi Outlawmws,

Thanks for the feedback. Good ideas. The wood lines work surface is a super thought.

The flip down door should be pretty secure when the cabinet is mounted to a wall...but for really heavy work it might need additional support.

We'll work on some of the ideas that have been mentioned and get back with updated photos...

Thanks.

When I first looked at it, I thought it would be great for a wiring bin to hold rolls of different sizes of wire. Just drill a hole at the bottom face where the rolls are at, put a grommet in, then just pull out the wire you need.

I also like the idea of a work shelf lined with wood or some other material.

I wanted to say thanks for all the comments and suggestions on the Pit Products Organizer Cabinet and Workstation.

I have some updated photos.

We did refine the design a little bit and here are some more photos showing the new product. Some of the comments mentioned that electrical parts might be good to store in a wall organizer such as this so I grabbed some wire nuts and some fuses to show how the bins could function.

On the work surface...add wood liner/stiffener as suggested, but also make the lowest shelf inside of heavier metal amd make wood lined hinged piece longer at the bottom so it bears against the full width of the HD lower shelf. That would make the work surface a LOT stronger and greatly increase the appeal of the device. It would be a great specialized station for pro shops, AND a nifty inside-the-closet-door home workshop for the poor devils with mechanical hobbies and only a small living space.
