Wall paint or floor paint first?

I searched extensively for some opinions on this and can't believe I didn't find anything; maybe I'm looking in the wrong places.

Can anyone offer reasons why I might want to paint the walls before I put down a floor coating, or vice versa?

Background info: my garage currently has painted drywall which I'd like to repair and recoat, and it has a crappy-painted floor which needs to be stripped/prepped/coated. My thought was to paint the walls first then farm out the floor to a reputable company to save myself the time of the extensive prep work that's necessary. I'm sure some plastic or something would be used to protect the walls during the floor work, but would anyone recommend I wait until the floor is done to paint, and why? Thanks.

Hey Brian,

I've done it both ways. Either way, something is going to have to get protected, be it walls or floor. My most recent project(the "wifes" garage), we did the floor first, then the walls, and had no troubles using drop cloths to protect the floor from the inevitable spills. My shop, we did the walls first, but had put down brown paper on the floor to keep the spills off, so cleanup was a breeze before doing the floor.

As far as recommending one over the other, I'm thinking it's really just personal preference.

Ceiling, Walls, Floors and then add trim/cove base. If no trim you may need to touch-up the walls here and there.

This is based upon using a low dust method of preparation.

I have them prime walls and final paint after floor is done. Even though you use a good vac setup, dust is in the air. If using a matt or semi gloss, it screws up the paint. If no vac, then final coat of paint is a must after floor because you have to get the dust off the walls.

Protect either walls or floor, depending on which way you go. gene, been there.....

That's how I do it if at all possible. I did mine that way.

If you have to strip or sand the floor to remove the existing finish, do that first. Then after that is done, repair and paint the walls. After the walls are done, then finish the floor. I'm the type of person that if I did the floor first, I'd probably kick over a gallon of paint or drop the pan doing the walls. I look at a garage floor the same as a house. New carpet goes in last.
