I am having a problem where my wife opens her door and puts a dent in the drywall of the garage (ever so often). Don't want to keep patching and painting dents and so I am looking for suggestions for something I can do to decrease wall dents from the opening of the driver side door.

Installations, products etc. Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks.

Get a new wife!

And what makes you think anything will improve ?? Women don't seem to care if they slam doors - open or closed :( :lol_hitti

If you are continuing to look along these lines, you need to consider opening arc of the door- look for a slender wife with smaller chest size. Whether you find this counter-productive or not is your call...

For the record, my wife has to open her door a heck of a long way to fit her chest through.... I just have a ready supply of touch-up paint for the car and leave the wall "as is" to remind me of my good fortune......:beer:

Bet your wife looks like your avatar pic. Lucky man. In that case, just fix the wall and the car door and remember to appreciate your fortune (See attachment).

Getting off-topic.

So back to wall protection ideas. Any thoughts? Something to protect the wall from car door opening dents.

I've seen pictures (I think in the sky mall catalogs) of what is basically an air mattress that hangs down alonside the wall. Kind of ugly though. How about a boat dock bumper from somewhere like a marine supply store (West Marine). I think they sell it bythe foot.

Someone had suggested that earlier in the thread. Any suggestions on where to get a nice one?

A friend of mine bought a rubbery panel to hang on his wall to protect both the wall and car door. I thin it came from Lowes or the like. I'm sure a quick Google search would help find this.

Have her fix the drywall and maybe she will be more careful from now on.

Go to WallyWorld and get one of those Water Noodles that kids play with in the pool. About 3' long and foam. They come in a multitude of colors. Get some heavy nylon string or small diameter rope, a couple of hooks above, and hang it down where the door hits. You'll probably have less than $10 in the whole thing.

What about a section of cork board? Should be soft enough to absorb the door impact, and thin enough to blend well with the wall. You can even inset it into the wall so it's flush with the drywall.

That is what I have done. I use a dowel through the center and you can hang it anywhere. I also slice it long way and use it as a corner protector.

piece of plexiglass can get it in seveal thicknesses

Where do you get plexiglass from and what is the price range on something like that?

Answer: Home Depot. Varying prices depending on size, thickness and color. Interesting.

The one option i posted was 10 bucks the other was $20. They are made specifically for this, why would you spend 10 bucks jerry rigging a pool noodle? :headscrat

Do you know if this can be painted? Then again, I guess just about anything can be painted with the right motivation.

Same idea but with a pine or what ever 1x6 piece of wood. Paint to match wall and screw into studs no more holes in wall done deal.

Really cheap fix.........Go to your local carpet store and ask if they have old carpet samples. (or if you have some old carpet laying around).Usually they will give them to you or at least cheap ($5) and put a couple of nails through it onto the wall.

Better yet,
Take a scrap piece of lumber (2x4 or what ever) and wrap it with carpet, staple it on the back side and screw it to the wall.

Here is a couple of pics..When we moved into this house the wall was already tore up from the previous owner and I didnt feel like replacing drywall at the time, so there was some extra carpet downstairs and a sheet of OSB...Hmmm easy cover up.

Foam pipe insulation works well if you have something to mount it to. I have some wrapped on the corner of a floor standing metal shelf unit.

Unless this is only a one car garage couldn't she park in a different bay so there is no wall on the driver's side?

Would be the same problem on the other side. And then she might open the drivers door into the side of my car. *gasp*

I put up 1x10 pine the length of the garage. I also made sure it was at the right height to protect the wall from my rolling workbench. I did a bit of research into alternatives before selecting this material. It is very inexpensive and effective.
