wall rack system for hanging stuff?

I'm converting a large closet to my outdoor gear room. I have so many packs and camping gear, it's going to look like the backpack section at REI... I was thinking of running a 2 or 3 rows of garage track so I can use modular hooks to hang all my stuff. Lowes and HD sell their versions, and I do love my Gladiator garage works brand of steel shelving. Is there a brand/system out there that's better than the rest?

I might also put a few feet of it in the shed for hanging yard tools on too (weed eaters, shovels, etc).

I was thinking along the lines of this: https://www.gladiatorgarageworks.com/pages/geartrack-packs

I don’t think there’s much difference. All the systems seem to sell their track cheap and then get you when you have to buy their proprietary hooks etc.
If I was you I’d stick with what you are currently using elsewhere.

I used Rubbermaid in my garage mainly because I bought a package deal from someone off our next door site. I got about 12ft of track and 11 misc. hooks for $65!
I thought about making a French cleat system but went with a quick solution to get stuff off the floor and up out of the way.

I did however build the shelves.

Don‘t overlook a section of grid system. I used a grid on the narrow side wall of a bedroom closet. It worked well to hang climbing helmets, rope, webbing, etc.
Hooks were cheap and there wasn’t much extra length sticking away from the wall.

You can find slatwall and the hooks cheap at going out of business sales. Retail fixturing, and sometimes office furniture can be had without breaking the pocketbook. Some OSJLs and all the Christmas Tree Stores are selling off their fixtures relatively reasonably.

I did some more research and pro-slat might be the winner. I hate proprietary stuff.

I used some steel pegboard in the basement for hanging stuff. Panels are pretty cheap and there are many different types of hooks to choose from. Relatively inexpensive

When I hung up our garden tools in the new shed & my smaller tools in the wood shop I just used some 1x4 or 1x6 & some small nails, screws, or hooks, whatever I had on hand for very low dollar outlay. Keep it simple.

i was thinking the same thing, if the OP has something he's already using somewhere else in the house/garage.
it seems to me all the "kits" ive seen never have the hooks ect in the quantity i wanted. i would find something locally and pick and choose what hooks and stuff i needed for whatever my needs were, and buy a few extra for future use.
wife found a couple of small kits of an oddball brand. they layed around for a while until i reorganized my reloading/gun room ended up using one of them to hang my competition gun belts on, the other ended up in my service truck to hang welding cables on.

Maybe try E track. We used it extensively inside cargo trailers for power line crews. A decent number of clip in options and not proprietary. Zinc, galvanized and even powder coated if you’re looking for some color options. It’s also common in trailers or toy haulers for securing vehicles. More than enough strength when properly fastened to the structure.

Got a table saw? Just rip a bunch of french cleat rails and make anything you want to hang off of it with scrap plywood pieces.

If any of your buddies are ordering NewAge cabinets soon, ask if you can bundle in slatwall and hooks. They discount that stuff a lot when bundled with a larger purchase. From what I've read their slatwall takes to aftermarket hooks well.

My whole world is done in Elfa: garage, interior closets, under stairs, inside cabinets, commercial kitchen, behind my bar, etc. Expensive is sometimes worth it, but I will say the track redesign a year ago was stupid.

Elfa is the shiz-nit for organization. At my prior CA house, I had 5 closets, a mud room, and a laundry room done up with Elfa stuff. Now I'm in Idaho and there's no damn locations of the "Container Store" where I can buy custom cut pieces.

A couple 1x4s and some 1/2" dowel rod would fix that right up. And for a helluva lot cheaper than any proprietary hangar system.

I used a metal slat wall/ pegboard from this site. Its the discount/clearance section of a major brand.
Different sizes and they can hang in horizontal or vertical orientation, just order what you want and pick the color. As a clearance site, not everything is in stock at all times.
They are supposed to be scratch and dent, but my items all looked great and only minor blemishes.

I use some gridwall in my attached garage that I use for parking. It was free to me after work changed a few displays. I see that you can find three panels like I have here for $125 on Amazon. You can do better at specialized stores though.

There are all kinds of brackets and mounting options. I hang spray bottles directly in the grid. And long tools can be slid behind since it is mounted off the wall by a few inches. Carabiners help too. You can also make custom hooks pretty easy.

This is how it sits today. It can stand to be organized again.
