Wall Sheating Question

Quick question on Side Walls.

I am building a 24' X 40' Workshop and for siding, using 1/2" X 4' X 8' Insulation Panels (Expanded Polystyrene with Aluminum Backing) and 5/16" X 4' X 8' Hardie Select Sierra Panels.

Do I also need to put OSB sheating on the studs or can I just use the Insulation Panels and Hardie Panels?

Thanks in advance.

You could use one sheet of plywood or osb on both sides of each corner or the cut in metal strap
bracing is another option. I would be concerned that any lateral racking would buckle
or fracture the hardie board without this additional bracing.

Really depends on local building code. In my area building inspector would not allow 5/8 T-11 siding without sheating underneath. (over kill but my opinion doesn't matter with Building dept)

jrocco,

- Hardie installation guide says the wall studs must be braced which means the Hardie cannot be assumed to act as sheeting.
http://www.jameshardie.com/pdf/install/hardiepanel-hz5.pdf

-Typically each wall stud needs to be braced by sheeting (osb or plywood typically) anyways to keep them from buckling when loaded.

- Sheeting will also provide the lateral bracing for the building (aka a "shear wall"). Let-in or strap bracing is also a form of lateral bracing for the whole building but those don't brace each individual wall stud.
