Wall timer switch with big heat sink?

I have a Leviton 6212H-I timer switch and the mounting plate is huge are they made that way sow you can only install in approved installations? It seems like the sides have trimming tabs is that what they are?

A picture would help, but if what your describing is what I think (6 flat blades of aluminum hanging on the side of the switch face behind the plate), then that is a heatsink for the internal contacts (and electronics). They are removable for gang mounting, but you have to de-rate the switch accordingly 1000 max watt with all tabs 600 max watt with no tabs , and not sure with 1/2 the tabs
