I am building a 24" x 30' garage/workshop (720 sq. feet). I am in north Alabama, so the winters are pretty mild, but the summers are warm. I am considering just putting a motel-type (not sure what they are called) heat/AC unit in the wall to give some comfort in the building - am I wasting my $$$ trying to do this?

I will not run it all the time - only days I am working in the garage - weekends and some evenings.

Look at split units too. No big hole in the wall. you can put the outside and inside units where you like too. Run very quiet. Through wall units are often less expensive per BTU and if you are a little handy you can install them yourself. One downside is unless bolted well they can be an entry point for thieves.

from what I have seen the split units are very expensive ($1000's) - am I missing something?
The wall units are $400 - $600 or so.

The through the wall motel units are PTAC units, a local HVAC place can source them for you or you can get an idea of what's available at ajmadison.com. I have two I'm about to put in for a shop space and a studio space in a barn we've recently built. The mini-split would probably be quieter but in general requires a professional install (due to the freon- or whatever is used these days) and are more expensive. The PTAC units I purchased are heatpumps with an electric back up and AC. The main disadvantage is you have to have a hole in the wall and 240V power to the units- we put the sleeves in during construction so no big deal.

I think that was the problem with Lowe's and Home Depot - most of the stuff they had has been cleared out for the Christmas merchandise...........
