Walling over old pocket door

Hoping there is a reasonable way to wall over an old pocket door without ripping out the surrounding drywall to remove the pocket door frame. Of course that would be the best way, but there are some cabinets on one side of the wall I don’t want to disturb.

Anybody that has done this before: I would would appreciate some tips. Door and surrounding trim is out no problem. I suppose I will have to cut track out so I can secure 2x4 at the top.

I’ve done some searching on the inter-web and on this website and didn’t find anything.

I think more often than not the pocket door is left in the pocket, and you just add a stud or two in the door opening to provide backing for the drywall. Notch the top of the studs to go around the track and leave it in place too.

Leave it. It is just a metal frame and may also have 1x verticals. Also someone may have attached the cabinets there. IIRC after I took out the door slabs I was able to remove the track with some difficulty reaching back into the door slot. New jack stud on the edge and ready for new casing.

Do you plan on replacing the pocket door with a normally hung or leaving it as a doorway ? If it's the latter, you could merely trim out the doorway.

man....no way I’d be closing it off. With the current barn door sliders craze that’s a great house detail. As said just some millwork over the opening with the door hiding will be fine

Thanks for the input guys. I ended up ripping the door and guts out. This left the lateral firring strips that create the pocket. I put some 2x4 blocking vertically between these and then built my stud wall, securing the blocking to the stud wall. Solid as heck. Turned out great.

Haha, that’s fair.
