Hey guys,

Im in the process of planning for future shop build and am just running through some design ideas. I am planning on building a 40x60 shop on a 4ft frost wall and just have a question about the wall design. The shop will be broken into a 40x40 which is constantly heated and keep at 40-50F and a 20x40 cold storage side.

Should I build a double offset 2x4 wall on a 2x8 plate or 2x6 strapped with 2x4 horizontally on the outside and use styrofoam board in the 1 1/2" cavity and house wrap the outer layer and cover with sheets on tin?

I will be building this with limited windows, the top R rated garage doors, in floor heat, roxul batt insulation in between the studs and air tight as possible.

Edit. This will be in central Alberta where its cold and windy.

Why not 2x6 with exterior foam? what is the need/benefit of the strapping?
Other option is interior foam followed by sheetrock.
then run electrical in conduits (no penetrations in sheetrock for a very good air seal)

This is a perfect situation for ICF's. Take them all the way down to the frost footing, and you'll have the most efficient space you could imagine. Sounds like you really are trying to make it super-efficient anyway. Insulate the slab with 2" xps.

I know you put your location in the text of your post, but better, look at the top of the page and go to "User CP" (control panel) and edit your profile with your location, Alberta or Central Alberta, is good enough, to help others in this and future posts. It will appear under your user name on the left side of the post.

The reason for the 2x4 strapping was for screwing down the tin.

And ive never worked with the icf blocks so im kinda leaning towards using lumber. And im not a fan of drywall in a shop. I would side the inside with either white tin or osb or plywood.

No issues with condensation if I housewrap outside of the styrofoam between the tin?

You are going to have to talk to a manufacturer.

Styrofoam makes an external products and you just tape it. The Styrofoam becomes the air barrier. Cost availability etc become the deciding factors.

I see home reno where they do tyvec and then do Styrofoam. I know yours is not going to have that "sheeting" that I see on renos. I poke around for info, but no promises.
