First time post - long time viewer. I'm a newbie on my way to finishing out my 30x50x11 garage. Got a question/scenario to bounce off of you guys.

I've got 11 ft walls (10 ft from the top of block). At the 9 ft mark there is 16" horizontal blocking in between the studs. That's a city code thing. This blocking then leaves a 2 ft' space up the wall to the ceiling. I'm going to do OSB.

Here's my question, it will be simple to throw a 4x8 sheet up and cover from the top of the cinder block up the 16" blocking. No cutting. Pretty straightforward.

For the two foot space above that - that I'm going to have all the way around the garage, what would you guys do with that space?

Cover it in the wall sheathing material? I have some felt wrap left over from the roofing and thought about covering it with that for simplicity sake. In the end most likely that top 2-3 feet of the wall will be framed storage racks suspended from the trusses, so you won't really see it.

I am insulating, so that may be my answer right there to go ahead and cover with OSB.

If I go with OSB, what's the best way to rip OSB? Table saw?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Yes, cover the space and you can rip the narrow pieces in the manner that works best for you. Table saw is best but skilsaw will work also. Good luck!

Great ideas. Thanks.

2nd question: Any tips/advice on hanging interior wall sheathing? I've got the cinder block and then a treated 2x8 on top of that. I plan on using that as the ledger or surface to set OSB panels.

I'm going to make sure the panels fall on a stud to start with. Wall frame is 16 inch centers.

Anything else I need to know about this whole thing? Any spacing in between boards or anything?

Thanks

It sounds like you're planning to use OSB on the inside of your walls. Have you thought about not using it on the outside of your walls to save cost and time? Depending on what kind of siding you're using, you might be able to skip the exterior OSB completely. I helped build a house using fiberboard sheathing:

You might have to use some exterior OSB at the corners for diagonal bracing, but otherwise, the interior OSB should provide all the strength you need for the garage walls.
