Want snap on box

So I've given myself a budget of around 3000 to spend on a used snap on box. I've for three nicer craftsmans now but they are tips and take up all my counter space. Plus I would like all my tools in one place not spread out over the different boxes. I'm just a home hobby mechanic but I've managed to acquire a pretty respectable set of tools. I watch Craigslist every day for deals on a nice rollcab.

I've narrowed my choice down to about three different models. Krl7022. Krl1022 and classic 96. From the guys that have them, which would you prefer and why? I have room for any if the three in the garage. This will be my "forever" box. I've found a nice classic 96 for 2500 asking price. The 7022 is 3000 and the 1022 is 4000. All with best offer tags. So lets hear the recommendations. The classic would be under budget by a bit and I would have to stretch for the 1022. I also plan in talking to the local snap on dealer to see what he has available and to possibly trade one of my boxes in

And don't tell me to buy a harbor freight box or any other brand. It will be a snap on only. I'm not afraid of hf as I have some of their offerings and a store about 15 minutes from me. Thanks!

My 2 cents: Any of them are good, but get the biggest KRL series box you can and you won't be disappointed -- best bang for the buck in used boxes. Wait around a while and keep searching something will pop up that fit's your budget.

Would it be worth it to go for the 1022 over the 7022. Is the extra height worth a thousand dollars? Both boxes are in excellent condition.

I have the 1023, and I wouldnt even think of downsizing to 7022, by the sounds of it, this could be the last toolbox you buy as it will last you a lifetime if you take care of it. Go big or go home.

Older KRL1003, or KRL1023, or if you want 2 full width top drawers, KRL1033. If this is the last box you plan on buying forever, I wouldn't go with anything smaller. There's a reason they are the most popular selling boxes, size is just right.

For $3000 you could probably pick up a KRL1003 or KRL1023 if you're patient and bide your time...

I like Snap On roll cabs but I wouldn't rule out Matco. I have 2 of them & actually like the quality of their drawer slides over Snap On. But ya, keep your eyes on CL & you can find some smokin deals.

Lets say I went with a 2 bank for now. I could always add on a side cab if I needed more room in the future. I do like the two full size drawers at the top. One for sockets one for wrenches. I like the three banks but they don't seem to come up much an they are more around the 5-6000 mark.

snap on has a better warranty, Matco boxes are not lifetime warranty even to the original purchaser,

Hmmmmm..... that's news to me & not what my Matco guy says.

My Snap On guy had a triple bank w/ hutch on his truck a few weeks ago, I don't remember the model #, it was green & only like 2 yrs old, he only wanted $2600 for it.

Pm sent about the box.

I planned on talking to my local snappy dealer on Friday when he stops by my buddy's shop to see what he had available or could get. I would love to trade in one of my boxes to help with the price as well. It's a 52" stainless craftsman top box. Still has the plastic on it.

Either wealthy or stupid. Which one?

Why am I stupid for investing in one box that fits my needs perfectly? I've been down the road of buying cheap boxes and making them work. It doesn't. I feel very unorganized and have tools in all four of the boxes I have. I want all my tools in one box.

I worked about six months worth of hours in the last month and a half so I've got the cash to make it happen. Wrenching is my only real hobby anymore and I'm in a position to buy whatever I want. Thank you for your concern.

Forget the classic and get a krl. Either one would be great, the 7000 series is awesome to work off the top, more like bench height. Forget the hang on idea and buy bigger box.

I understand you wanting to buy a box that fits your needs for the rest of your life.

But snap on is not the be all end all of boxes, especially for a hobbyist. At least check out strictlytoolboxes.com, site sponsor. As a hobbyist those boxes will last you the rest of your forseable life and you can get a monsterous box for $3000.

I have a krl 7022 and a krl 1022. Being on the shorter side, 5' 8" I like working off the 7022 better but it's still not too bad working off of the 1022. I would keep looking for a 1022 in your budget if I were you. You should have no problem finding a 1022 for 3 grand in my opinion.

Go for that snap on Schwinn! Your buying used so it will be a great buy I bet. Don't let the anti snap on guys bring ya down! Most of them just wish they had a snap on.

Those boxes from strictlytoolboxes.com would last a professional for the rest of their careers too if they were cared for :)

On a similar note, professional brand boxes have become so readily available, that they're now sprouting up in home owner garages all over America. Whatever one desires, one can get.

He said he specifically wanted SO (not HF or another Chinese box).

The bigger KRL1022 is the box you really want, so don't settle for less.

Expand your search on CL or Ebay as these pop up in the $3K range. See trick below for searching whole country for market prices.

Use Google and search:
. . . . SnapOn KRL1022 site:craigslist.org

Here's a pretty nice orange one in Concord, NC for $3800 with stainless top.

Thanks for all the replies fellas!

I have done my due diligence on other brands of boxes including the ones from strictlytoolboxes. None have the layout and size that I'm after and for the price of them new I can get a gently used snap on that fits me perfectly.

There is a 1022 available locally. Hopefully I can go check it out in the next couple days.

Agreed, I have friends that have Montezumas or Masterforces, and they are fine, but there's just something about having a Snap On that makes me feel better. Parts will almost always be available also. Call me stupid- I don't care since I ain't wealthy!

Get the snap on 1022 box, its what I have and its all the room you'll need and should be had pretty decent price wise. I'd stay away from the classic line because they are boxes but an economy line quality.

The only difference between the 7022 and 1022 is two extra drawers correct?

I found a 7022 about 15 miles from me that I can buy for well under budget. It will actually fit better in the space I have. I've spent a while today rearranging the garage. Now I h e a better idea what size I want and where I can put it.

I have a 1022 and wound never want to step down to a 7022, not enough shallow drawers. I would not rule out classic 96 for the right price. For the home guy, a 1022 would be a very big box and I see little reason to get a triple bank.

I'm not sure what the rest of the shop looks like, but those boxes are utilizing a lot of valuable work space.

Yes sir they are. This is the main problem I'm trying to solve. I will get a pic of the rest of the garage. My wife parks her escalade in half. The rest is my work are. I just pull hers out of the way for more space.
