My house has a two sided breaker box located outside with the meter on one side and breakers on the other. Is it permissable to mount another breaker box on the inside of the garage running the wire from the meter to the new box and running all my breakers from it, leaving the other box empty? I've never like having the box outside and when I have bought breakers for it they seem to be the most expensive and in the shortest supply.

It apparently is common for houses in the west to have the entire breaker panel outside. I see in catalogs such as Siemens that they list Western panels and this is their feature. This wouldn't be a Federal Pacific panelboard by any chance? Those would have the most difficult to obtain, and thus most expensive breakers?

You would need to check with local building inspection people to determine if their is some requirement for the panel to be outside.

Thanks Charles, I'll talk to the people at the city and see what they think. I definitely don't want to do this in some way that is either a hazzard or a code violation. You do see those two-sided outside boxes every where here. IIRC, I believe the breakers were described as "Z" type. The last time I bought one, the Home Depot guy said I might want to consider changing my box because of the cost and avaialability of these things.

Thanks again
