Wanted: Machining work

Good morning.

I have what some of you will consider a very simple machining project I would like to farm out to someone. I am in the process of building a custom drum set and while I have a handle on the shells and have already completed 3 drums I would like to create my own drum lugs. I made the mistake of finishing 3 drums in an off the shelf lug so I am already locked into specific mount spacing. But I have designed something I like am looking for someone to machine a prototype for me. I suppose even 3D modeling would be fine if someone on here does that sort of thing.

Here is a picture of the lug. You can see it is actually 3 pieces combined to make one lug. I have full AutoCAD ".dwg" prints that I could email if needed or could convert to PDF as well. Dimensions are roughly 2"x1"x1" just to give you an idea of scale.

I apologize I guess that would help. The final product will be steel and aluminum but for the prototype I don't really care. I mainly want something I can fit to the drum, make sure it's going to fit up with the hoop correctly and just hold in my hand to get the overall aesthetics in the real world. Eventually I will want 48 of these things made to cover the kit.

Although I cannot assist. I think it would be a great idea for a sticky thread of requests. Like if someone could build/do this for me type of thing. As I was (kind of still am once I get funds) looking for a wood person to make a shift knob, etc. Just an idea

Find a 3d print service near you. Some UPS stores are now offering the service.

definitely id 3d print the first set.

do a search online for 3d print service, where you email the file and receive the part back they are pretty cheap.

but for the machining side of the thread id love to see one of these threads take off.

I think Kevin or someone started a capabilities and location thread or something along those lines. It hung around for a while but it seemed to float away in abyss. I know I as well as a large number of members on here done a few parts for members when time allows.

I can't help with the machining, I have a project of building a kit using acrylic shells. I like your ideal. What have you modeled these after?

They are kind of a rip off of Sonor's SQ2 design but a little more simple. I also re-engineered the area that accepts the tension rod so that it will have some play to allow for variation in the hoop/head combo and the shell but still isolate that area from the parts that actually mount to the shell to hopefully increase resonance.

Thank you! I found a 3D printing place near me and am going to try that first. But I am not sure if they will be able to translate my 2D prints into a 3D file. I had a buddy create that model from my 2D views as I am not 3D savvy. If they can't do it then I will hit you up.

If they cant/wont work with the 2D file you can send me the drawings and I'll make a 3D solid model for you to give them.

$40 for material and $40 for machining for one lug. Probably use USPS flat rate box to ship. Let me know, I can knock it out by early next week. Will also need your dwg file for actual dimensions. If you want more than 1 lug I can do better on T&M price.

They bolt to the wood shell of the drum around the diameter so that you can bolt the hoop that holds the drum head down and create tension which is where the sound comes from.

My advice would be to carefully measure each shell and the corresponding hoops because the tension rod distance may (will) vary from drum to drum. I machined and sold solid lugs in the mid 2000's, and misalignment was a big issue. Shell tolerances vary and there's a large-ish number of hoop manufacturers building to their own specs.

I completely understand and thank you for the tip. If you notice there is clearance between the large lug and the perpendicular rod. That clearance will be taken up by a soft foam for two reasons. 1) to eliminate vibration/noise and 2) to allow for tolerance stack up between the shell, head and hoop.
