I'd try to hunt up a used D70/80/90/200 instead of dealing with a D1 of any flavor. About the only thing going for them is that they use the F5 meter (which Nikon started using all of the cameras I just mentioned) and they're built very solid.

Not to steal your thread or anything, but a Canon Rebel XTi would do just as good and they're only about $300 or so used on Ebay and you can probably pick one up cheaper than that on Craigslist. Either way, good luck.

$300 where are you looking. They are going for a fraction of that price.
Go to the Goodwill.com Auction site. They come up there all the time. They go cheap. SLR camerias are a dime a dozen and Nikon is better than Cannon.
Try a pawn shop, swap meet and yard sales. Good camerias are being dumped for digital. I bet you get one for under $100 buck. Going on E-bay? Are the selling for that price or is that what they are asking. I have sveral of them but not selling them.

If you're into Nikon, forget the D1, and get something current with a CMOS sensor. Today's generation of CMOS sensors in a DX format are WAY better than those old FX CCD sensors. Maybe a used D5000. It won't have some of the features that you get in the better models (it'll have a penta mirror, instead of a prism, and a smaller display), but it will still outshoot a D1, and have better color rendition than a D2 (perhaps not quite the low light capability).
