Wanted: Unconventional Tool Storage Ideas

Okay, so I have run out of places to keep my tools, and run out of space for additional storage.

Do you guys have any unconventional tool storage ideas? At this point, I'm tempted to start sneaking them inside the file cabinet and kitchen cutlery drawers!

At work I have a file cabinet for the bulky stuff that i use but not that often and I even have stuff in my car ie diagnostic stuff that i dont want to be borrowed

I live in an apartment, if that makes a difference. That greatly limits my storage space, but you wouldn't believe how efficiently I pack the space I have.

Maybe I need fewer hobbies... nah.

haha, I considered strapping some of the tools to the ceiling, but the composition of the ceiling would make that extremely difficult.

I'm actually cleaning up the place so that I can take pics (and move around easier). Its current state is not photogenic at all.

How about purchasing or renting a home with a large garage.

I like the ceiling hanging idea - if not that, then go to your local craft store and get some shadow boxes. Mount/hang some tools in there, and hang it on the wall as art. Like this: http://dannyseo.typepad.com/my_weblog/2008/07/kitchen-art.html but with tools.

Living in L.A., I'm also space challenged. Here are my workarounds:

1) everything vertical. Even heavy tools such as my pro tile saw are turned on end so they go up not out.

2) entire garage ceiling consists of hooks, with tools hanging.

3) lots of high vertical tool boxes. Sears has a lot of my money.

4) farming out tools to friends and relatives. Make sure Mom is stocked with the latest and greatest. Brother in law regularly receiving large cast iron tools, etc.

5) Metal file drawers work great when you run out of tool chests.

6) There is a tool chest in my work office.

That's a great idea, and is my plan for when I'm finally done with my schooling and get a job.

Not bad ideas. But, only some of my walls are load bearing. I have plans on installing small runs of Gladiator hooks and pegboarding, but that requires me to clean the clutter to be able to maneuver to the wall.

Wow, with that setup you can have every wrench set to a particular size, and never need to adjust any of them! 4mm - 20mm

Kind of hard to make suggestions when;

a. we don't know what you have. (Lots of large power tools? bench tools? Mostly hand tools?)
b. we don't know the layout. (One room? the whole appt?)
c. do you have a SO (Sig Other, not the "other" SO...) to deal with? (Is WAF an issue..)

One thing I will say; when you are space impacted, to make progress, you will HAVE to **** up and get something out of the way temporarily to get started in a corner/wall...

I started this thread over 2 years ago, and it looks like it was reopened by a spammer.

Since then, things have gotten worse, and well, I've given up. We'll be out of here within a few months (hope so at least), so I'm not going to give much though to making things look pretty.

a) What don't I have? In addition to my own personal tools, I've got review samples coming and going, with a few staying for long-term testing.

b) I try to keep the tools inside a single room, but they've spilt out of there.

c) Yes, I do, and I don't quite know how she puts up with all this.

And I totally agree, when tooled into a corner, one does what they need to to keep projects moving forward.

Me too, but it probably won't. The plan right now is to write my dissertation, defend it, and find a job. Wherever we live probably won't be perfect, and we'll likely end up renting for another year somewhere while house-shopping.

The shocking thing is that I keep buying tools for random projects. I'm probably going to rent a storage space at some point also to help with the move-out process, but will put clothes and season things in there so I put some of the overflow tools in my bedroom closet. =)
