Wanting to build a Shop/Entertainment Area

So not sure what to call it, I want to build 1 large structure and in it I want about 20% of it to be garage/shop/lofted storage, the other 80% to be a really large finished multipurpose room for entertaining friends and family.

Every year, we have anywhere from 15-35+ folks over for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Halloween, New Years, Birthdays Cinco de mayo and other events.

We've even booked a live band 4 or 5 times. When we do that, we just set them up on our back patio and had folks bring lawn chairs and set out on the lawn. Its always seemed like a big hit.

So in this structure, I kinda have a layout or features I want in mind.

On the West wall I want a small kitchen with Fridge/Freezer, Possibly Stove and sink with a counter,

On the North wall I want to do some type of a Bar, nothing real fancy, but usable, possibly a Fireplace or wood stove to heat the place and provide that Ambiance that a Fireplace provides...

On the East end of the place I want a decent sized, elevated stage (maybe 2-3' High) for a live band to play and a large screen behind it. With this it can can also be used as a Home Theater.

On the South Side I want a few couches and chairs for general chilling and they can be pushed into the center for Home Theater night.

In the Center, I want 4-6 long Tables and a bunch of chairs, so when we have folks over for a Christmas/Thanksgiving meal, everyone has a place to sit and eat and are not shoved off in a corner somewhere...

The garage section, I want to be able to park two Full size trucks, a Poloaris Ranger 1000 SxS, 2 bigger ATVs and a Zero Turn mower.
Even though I'm not a mechanic, I'll need an Air compressor and plenty of work bench space for hobbies.

Ideally, I'd want a mezzanine or a lofted section for additional storage on the back wall of the garage section and maybe over the big section depending on costs and feasibility

It'd be great to store all the wife's seasonal decorations, extra **** from the basement and other ****.

Still not sure what to call it. Also, not sure what size building I'll need. I want to keep costs down, but I want to do it once and do it right.

Any one built anything similar, I did not see anything in the gallery, I'd love to see some inspirations.

Wow Smullen, Subscribed. Wife just "suggested" I put all my man cave stuff that's in storage into my garage instead of in a room in the house. So I'm also pondering garage plan that's currently 4 bay 38 x 50 and how to fit gas fireplace in a corner, a sofa or two, a table/desk and a place for all my auto books and manuals. How much wider than a normal car width bay to accommodate the mancave/entertaining stuff is my question.

The garage space you describe would need to be about 40 x 30. If the party room is 4 times that you have a 6000 square foot building. Maybe the 80/20 is off a bit. Assuming you have a big enough lot and a lenient enough local government your only real challenge will be cost. Once you bring a live band into the equation the level of interior finish goes up.

I'd start by doing a basic floor plan sketch and see what size and shape building you really need.

I've always liked the idea of an 'accessory' building, and am working on it myself. It started many years ago, when my mother had a tiny house, but a finished barn, which we used for entertaining, and a guest house for overnight guests. The only catch was that the local zoning folks wouldn't let her put a bathroom in the barn.

Here in rural SC, we have no such restrictions. I built my barn first, including a bathroom, then lived in it while I built the house. 2/3's of my 28 x 48 barn is separated off for my workshop. I'm working on finishing the remaining 16x28 as a great room. The ceiling is 22' high. I'm putting used roofing tin up for a ceiling, and plan tongue and groove pine on the walls. Heat will be a wood stove. Around here, as long as it doesn't have central HVAC, it's not considered living space, so they don't tax you on it.

My project is much smaller than yours, with the biggest crowd we ever get is maybe 12-15 people, and that's rare. I've always thought it made good sense to have space such as this that you only heat when you're actually using it, rather than having a huge house that's empty 95% of the time.

I also thought a 40 wide by 30 deep for the garage area walled off, then figure the square footage needed or wanted for the party area. Without knowing the size area available for the building and access to the building for vehicles and such it’s a bit hard to give good pointers.

Do you have access to paper and pencil?

Take 20-30 pages, start making floor plans.... Consider how it will be used for diffrent things.

Repeat

Repeat.

Lay the drawing on the counter...talk to the family about it..engage others... Revise..etc

IMO Cad software FOR PEOPLE THAT DONT USE CAD SOFTWARE is a waste of time and simply places another 'barrier' in the process.

I dunno. I downloaded a free copy of Sketch-Up, and figured out how to use it. I designed my entire house, layed out the land, and still design all sorts of stuff with it. I'm an old fart (66), yet find it pretty easy to use.

I really like having a spot for entertainment off my garage. Mine is no where as big as yours, but one thing I have noticed is the need for it to be insulated. I bought my house about a year and a half ago and my garage (old barn converted to garage) has a nice Flordia room attached on the one side. If I were to build something myself I think I'd keep an attached room for entertainment, but put it on the other side of the garage and I would raise the ceiling of my garage so I had more storage and could get a lift. I do have some better pictures I can post, but not on my phone at the moment.

Dont get me wrong, ive used autocad in the past, lots of design suites. Sketchup is fine.

My issue is that having a tangible paper layout - as opposed to a screen- can be more useful in the 'mulling it over' and 'revising and changing' process. Especially when more than one person is involved.

I can print up to 11x17 at home, and I do- but then I will hand sketch ideas onto that, the refine the e-drawing later. How many builders spread a table across the hood of the truck?

Again, maybe I'm asking for a bit much.


Our house currently has a 1 car garage that the SxS, a few Bikes and Zero Turn a shoved in, then I have a prefab shed that has two ATVs, a bunch of steel shooting targets and other thing that are not used much.


I wanted to keep all the shooting stuff in the shed and condense everything else into the garage portion of the new building.


We have almost three acres and live outside of town.

We are surrounded by the neighbors pastures. They have over 600 Acres...



Also, we don't have any zoning or much on the rules out here, so I can do what I want for the most part.


The biggest problem will be paying for it.



Some of the interior and electrical work I can do myself.


Like recommended I do need to sit down and sketch out some where I think I want what and I'll have to rethink all the **** I'll cram in the garage.

I don’t think it’s a bit much to have a dedicated garage space separated from the entertainment area as long as you realize the size of building you’ll need and have room for it. That’s actually the way I’d prefer it set up if I were doing it.
