Warn Snoplow Problem

My dad called me and is having a problem with his plow. I went through the WARN troubleshooting guide and didn't find it.

Here's what is happening:

1. He busted a line on the swivel the other day. Made a new hose and installed.

2. It wasn't going up all the way. Filled Hydraulic reservoir, problem fixed.

3. It goes side to side fine now, but only goes up 6 inches. Release trigger and push up, it goes another 6 inches. Repeat until fully raised. Very slow to go down as well.

4. I went over filling it with hydraulic fluid correctly several times. Seems to be okay.

I unfortunately can't actually put my hands on it as I'm sure I would be able to find the problem.

What else comes to mind?

Possible Air in the line? Im sure there is a bleeding procedure for those pumps.

You may need to bleed the system. Also when the fitting broke did any pieces of metal get into the hydraulic system? A small piece can block or limit the travel of a spool valve.

I could not find any bleed procedures online for it. The fact that the side to side works fine, leads me to rule the air in the system out. In my experience, the open return systems where it has a reservoir normally is self-bleeding.

FOD in the spool valve could be possible.

Anyone else have any guesses?

I would try cracking loose the Up down line and having someone run the switch, It would be very easy to determine if you had air in the line. I replaced some lines on my 175 MF a couple years ago and was having intermittent lift on my loader and bleeding the lines fixed my problem.

If you get any snow in there it can freeze. We had that problem with Meyer plows. It got so bad that at the start of plow season we drained all the pumps and refilled them with fresh fluid. No more problems after that.

What kind of a plow is it ? I know Warn made winches and hubs but I never heard of them making a plow.

That's because they don't...... It's a Western.

Sounds like air to me also. Try bleedeing it while someone is on the switch.

At work, we lower the plow, then push the piston the rest of the way down (while someone hits the switch) before adding fluid. You might have to stand on it to get it down. I don't even know if what we are doing is right, but we have about 50 of these.

Check the electrical connectors. You could have a connection to the solenoid which is overheating and cutting the juice, then when you try again overheating and cutting the juice... I don't know Western, I have Meyer, but it strikes me as a possible cause.
