Washer drain question

I have attached a drawing of a basement washer drain I am questioning. It is a 1.5" PVC.

1. How much head elevation is a washer designed to pump?
2. Is this drain to code?
3. Is this drain to close to the main in respect to elevation? Looks like a minor back up could easliy push out of the 1.5" drain pipe?
4. Should a discharge pump be used? if so could it be connected to this drain?

You will not be happy. That setup does not have enough rise to the entry pipe. The newer washers have a high capacity water discharge that requires {i think}32 inch of drop before the pee trap. this is on 2 inch pipe with no restrictions. The platform drawers now sold are causing trouble with drain pipes for this reason

Yea, you want to add a Wye above that big main 90 so that if the main ever backs up even a little bit it won't be injecting that nasty stuff into your washer room. I'd also highly recommend a check valve, and I don't know where you're at but here PVC isn't used for anything other than temporary water lines. Use ABS, pretty much puncture resistant and more durable.

MasterLow, could you educate us on the advantages/disadvantages of ABS vs. PVC? Around here both are approved, and a professional plumber will use PVC.

If you are planning on doing this right (and to code) it's going to depend on what is feeding that stack. I'm in California and work under the UPC and California Plumbing Code. Your area may or may not fall under the same codes. I don't know if Indiana is a UPC or IPC state. If a water closet is upstream of that stack, you are not able to tie into it as MasterLow mentioned. You're also going to have to consider a vent off of this new fixture tie in. To give you a better answer, I'd have to see more of the system.


I should also add that ABS and PVC are both legal here. ABS is seen more frequently in my area though many plumbers prefer non-cellular core PVC. I'd use whatever the existing plumbing is done in.

After review of the washer specification the drain can be place up to 8 feet above the base. I could place a Wye in the riser and place the drain as high as practical. There is however two water closets on the above floor.

When I moved here to Missouri had to learn that there is no ABS allowed. Have never heard a good reason
