I guess I really need a carport to help fight back the summer sun. Anyone have a good idea for temporary shade. I've looked at the 10x10 instant canopies but have always ruled them out as being too small to be much help.

Are you looking to store your car in it or just something to wash your car under? During the summer I get up early to wash my car. I like being alone with my car while the neighborhood is still quite. Then when everyone starts sturring you're car already looks great.

Can't help you with the canopy idea as I've adopted the early or late method. One thing to look into to make washing a lot easier is Optimum No Rinse (ONR). It takes a leap of faith but it works like nothing I've seen. All you need is two gallons in a bucket, ONR, a sponge, and a towel to dry. I can do a regular sedan in about 30 minutes. No marring if you do it right too.

A friend of mine has been looking into an awning that can be retracted against the house when not in use. Like the ones they can install over a deck or patio.

I have used some of the no rinse, or "waterless" products, but in my thinking, there's no substitute for a traditional wash. Fender wells, wheels, etc. I know lots of folks have good results with these products, but I lay use them if absolutely necessary.

Of topic a bit, but my attached garage has all the washing equipment installed by the door. Light duty pressure washer with over 50' of hose on a reel and a water deionizer for spot free drying without towels.

Along similar lines, I prefer to wash my car in the early evening. Just as the sun's going down when you can tell the paint surface will get a bit cooler to the touch. The reduction in direct sunlight alone is that much better for preventing water spots, and I like relaxing outside after dinner anyways.
