For what? Shop heat? Furnace or forge use?

I converted a residential burner with a preheater to handle the viscosity. Only way to go IMHO, screwing around with preheated surface for atomization is just a nuisance BTDT. I have since sold the forge and only use propane now (hardly do much forging anymore) :(

Waste oil is kinda like wood heat. Yes it heats well and seems efficient, but boy, you handle that oil a lot, collecting it, filtering it, storing it, cleaning the unit, filtering it, etc. You have to really be into it to deal with the hassle. What is used oil selling for in your area.

Handle the oil a lot ? My customers dump the oil in the tank and done. With commercial made units most of my customers only need to clean ash 1x a year maybe 2x and that is after 750-1500 hours of actual burn time. All the bad stuff settles to the bottom of tank so you keep your p/u screen so many inches off the bottom and you are good to go.

SS, having followed some of your posts over time, I know you are a fan and are successful with it. I congratulate you for your hard work, understanding & success. That said, I've been in the oil heat business a long time and have seen folks who are not really set up for it or do not really understand what is involved get very frustrated with it and give up on it. I will only commend your success, but not everyone has your understanding and support.

I agree, 100%, you've got to do a fair amount of research and really know how to make things work. I played around and built a Babington Ball Burner nozzle that worked quite well, but lost interest when it came time to automate it. A .010 orifice with the oil preheated to 180* yields about a 50K BTU flame. The upside to it is you only have to filter out the big chunks of crud and it'll burn up to about a 20% mix of water with the oil and you cannot clog the nozzle itself. There's a bunch of Yahoo chat groups to help you do it or a converted Beckett Burner.

They are active in the yahoo groups a fair amount.

Good luck, it's actually a lot of fun.

I can get all the used oil I want for free and of course I know I would have to filter it . This is pretty much what I was thinking of going with .

I'm sorry I should of been more clear . I want to make one to heat my garage

I burned used motor oil in this old carb type oil burner for years...diluted the oil with 30% heating oil so it would flow and did not have black smoke belching from my chimney
