Anybody got anything interesting to store waste oil before taking it down for disposal?
With all the buckets I have now, I don't use it much anymore though

Not too exciting, but I work at a restaurant and all of the veg oil we use in the deep fryers comes in big plastic 5 gallon jugs. When we change the oil in the fryers the jugs get tossed. So I took a few home and use those. Best part is they are free. Can usually go several oil changes before emptying.

I drove by my old house yesterday, the 2 55gal drums of old oil are still there & are now obviously the responsibility of the guy that bought the place. I know one was leaking when I moved out 2 years ago, probably empty by now..... Maybe it will dilute the cadmium chloride that was spilled there..

You just left those leaking barrels there? The realtor and new owner didn't say anything about them?

Those are the best.

Our restaurant doesn't use those but we do buy salad oil in ~2 gallon jugs, they're almost as good.

I use large laundry detergent jugs. They work great. It gives new meaning to detergent oil....

Lender committed mortgage fraud & I lost the house. The oil is the least of their problems compared to the other issue.

I thought the barrels had gone, pretty sure I saw them out in front of the garage just after I moved out, was surprised to see them stashed alongside the garage again.

Just for history, that's a military water can (not oil/fuel.) Water case had the big opening, fuel cans a small opening. If the inside is not rusted it has some value (water cans are not as valuable as fuel cans) so don't just throw it away.

I use an old 5 gal metal can that originally was lacquer thinner solvent can. Actually have 2, since I can fill up one with one oil change on the diesel engine from motorhome. They have screw on lids and being metal except the plastic neck I do not have to worry about knocking it over or any durability.

Like the OP I use an old metal NATO jerrycan, its one that was past its best for fuel as the paint inside was flaking off and causing me problems so now it gets waste oil dumped in it until I take it to the recycling centre.

I use plastic jugs very similar to what you're describing except that mine came from a car dealership's detail department. The generic Scotch-Guard and auto wash soap that they use comes in ten gallon plastic containers.

They are very sturdy, have molded-in handles, are re-sealable and they are stackable, and yes, they were free, which is the best kind of thing. The mouths are about four inches across so they pour fast and smoothly when I'm dumping them out at the auto parts store or the oil dumpster at the landfill.

Yep. Sounds almost exactly like what I am using. They are opaque square shaped jugs with molded in handles and about a 3" diameter mouth. I also take them to auto zone to empty

Strange. I thought fuel cans had 3 handles and water cans had 1.

I have a few plastic 5 gallon jugs that we bought fire fighting foam in. The foam goes in the fire trucks and the jugs are left over. For some reason, the plastic is pretty thick, much thicker than any other jug I've ever seen.

When I fill all of them, I take them to a neighbor who heats his garage with waste oil. He strains the oil, dumps it in his holding tank and drops off my empty jugs.

Where does everyone take theirs?

Our City has An Old Gas tanker that has been converted to hold oil..........With a flip open car rim lid......

I take mine to the city dump. They have an oil recycling tank. Or, if I am in a hurry, to Autozone. Dump for old motorcycle tires too.
