waste oil heat?

Hey all I just aquired a good shape Grimsby oil fired furnace putting out 100,000 btu at .85 gph based on the tag the pump however states 3.0 gph. I just hooked it up to 110volt and set up a 5gallon pail to feed it currently have it runnin at 2 gallons waste oil and 2 gallons clean farm diesel with a simple inline filter

My questions are to they guys burning waste oil are #1 running straight waste oil? Or a mix at 4-1 waste oil to clean diesel?

#2 What are you're filter set UPS? I know I need water fuel seperator and a 20 miron filter or their about to do this properly what filter heads are affordable and common

#3 preheat a 5 gallon tank before the unit so I get consistent flow and clean burning

And I guess the last one would be larger jets and air injection I hear this mentioned alot on different forums she has been running happy and clean on a one to one mix right now id really like to get it up to a 4-1 mix or straight waste oil my waste oil consists of 70% 15w40 and 20% 5w30 and 10% atf and 80-90 fluids very low water content as I can control what goes into the 250 gallon tank I plan to plum into it thanks guys

It's not as simple as you think. You have a fuel oil furnace, not a waste oil furnace. It can be converted but will take time and money. Mainly time. Check out altfuelfurnace on Yahoo. Years of info there. They WILL expect you to read A LOT before you just ask questions though so be warned. Oil should be filtered to 10 micron or less if possible. The ONLY way your going to run more oil is with a Kagi head, larger Delavan nozzle, air to help atomize, and a heater block to thin the oil. Basically converting the furnace to run on waste oil just like the commercial units.

Thanks for the heads up ill check out that yahoo forum what is a kagi head? I will say its nice to be in my shop/pole barn atm In a sweater at 50 degs outside and raining this is something in wanting to pursue over the summer in preparation for next winter between this and my wood stove I shouldn't need my radiant propane heat at all and closer I can get to 100% waste oil obviously the Bette. My only experience with waste oil was in a old garage/barn where I had a drip setup into my top load cast iron firebox she put off alot of heat

The other problem you will run into is that the flame is MUCH longer on a waste oil furnace. It will hit the back wall and burn it out quickly! Its neat to learn about them, but unless you really want another hobby, i HIGHLY suggest buying an actual waste oil furnace. Trust me, i tried to. It can be done, but will take hundreds of hours to get running and fine tuned so it will just work. I would call your local CleanBurn, or Energy Logic dealer and see if they have rebuilt units. You'd be money and time ahead....

we had a Reznor waste oil Furnas in our warehouse, it has a std. oil heater Becket pump with a special nozzle. it has a hole in the center and a ring opening around the hole. oil comes out the center hole and air comes out the ring hole . you also need to heat the oil and I would try and keep the heavy oil out 80-90 wt. separate

I'll definatly keep doing my research my main thing atm is filtration? I'm not sure where to even start as to filter heads and what not I run wix filters in everything so would lil to keep a common filter set up if I can

Any other forums or boards to look at besides the yahoo link mentioned? I got the idea for the drip set up I believe off mother earth news dont recall anything on their for a straight conversion to waste oil

Screw on filters like for a car wont go to a low enough micron rating. You can use a house waterfilter, those will go down to 5 micron, or i think even 2 microns. When I was playing around with it i had a pump setup to transfer oil from one drum to another. I'd pump off the top 2/3's from one barrel into the other. Let mother nature work and settle most of the contaminates. The pump had two screw on car style oil filters. That got me down to 20-25 microns. Then a whole house water filter at 5 microns. I helped a lot. Many are just using a centrifuge. Less work, no filters. That same group on yahoo had figured that out too.

On our heaters we use a 100 micron stainless steel washable filter. You do not want to use a paper element on the suction side.

On an actual waste oil furance thats fine. On a bone stock fuel oil furnace you're trying to run waste oil thru it wont work though and the nozzles will plug very easily.
