I was pretty much set on a forced air propane heater( which I have installed) and got to reading all this talk of waste oil heat got me to thinking and I found a used Eliminator Shop and Garage Waste Oil Heater. My question is are these a reliable unit? I've read the reviews, but there were only 5 and all but 2 were good. So anyone have any input on this? He want's $1500 for the unit, a new one is $2500 plus tax.

Thanks,

Vic

I am also interested in the comments on waste oil heat, what i have read so far seems to indicate that the waste oil heaters require lots of cleaning and maintenance....true?
chipping out of waste oil ash/sludge etc. is it more work than its worth?

Well, if you can get the oil for free, I would say it is worth it. They are a lot of maintenance, you DO have to clean them often. It can be difficult to get parts for, make sure you have a local distributor for parts, help and service. I would say you still need a back-up heat source. So if you can get the oil for free, you don't mind cleaning the unit, and you can fix it, it is well worth it.

I have access to large quantity's of waste oil, I was hoping for input on this particular unit. The overall savings would be worth it, however if the unit is **** then the point is moot.
