Hey everyone.
At my present job, each tech has their own oil drain. We currently have to take them outside to empty them when they are full.
This means shovelling a path to the large holding tanks, running air line out and putting 3/4 inch heater hose from the drain tanks into the holding tanks.
We want to be able to hook up a spot inside the shop to make it easier.
Anyone else do a set up like this. Do not just a hose thru the wall. We want it to be a good set up. Some kind of quick connects with anti drain back valves?
Ball valves to shut off?

In some of the Army motor pools they have a setup that has and area with different 55 gallon drums for oil and coolant. The lids were custom with one side having an opening for a suction tube, and the other for a heavy duty funnel. The suction tubes were about 2" in diameter with a screen at the end of the hose. They were connected to a siphon pump that was driven by the shop air, then went through the wall in 2" piping directly into huge storage tanks. It was the biggest pain in the *** we ever dealt with. It was nice in theory, but the diaphragm in the pumps kept getting tore up. We were always working on them. They were loud as hell when running. Also, everyone wanted to dump oil, but nobody wanted to stick around and pump it out to the main tank. Or, the pump would be broke and people would still keep filling the 55g drums. Then overfill and spill on the floor. We also had issues with the plumbing from the pump to the tanks getting clogged with the metal shaving that tore up the pumps. It was much easier to just go and dump it in the tank. We all gave up on the other system.

A gravity drain system (think of something like a staircase up to a platform, then dump into a hopper and leave, waiting for the flow to well, flow) would be very reliable imo. Put in a tee instead of elbows for rodding out clogs. Use threaded black pipe.

use the 275gal totes to store the oil. the tote is outside. we use a 16 gallon drain pan with wheels and an electric pump on the inside of the building to dump oil into. this is plumbed to the outside tote via a hose going directly into the screw in lid of the tote. when the drain pan gets full we just turn on the pump to transfer it to the tote. just have to watch so the tote doesn't overfill. hope that makes sense.

How big are the individual units?
There are numerous ways to lift and turn barrels of all sizes from vertical to horizontal.

You may be able to fabricate one from an engine lift spreader bar,
Put a regular barrel faucet in the ********* before lifting to a funnel that drains through the wall.

Put a cheap electric hoist above the funnel and hoist away.
