Who knows, maybe he used an asp to break the window and reached in and opened the door manually for them to exit the vehicle.

That is some bad luck right there! Get struck by lightning while driving.
You won't get electrocuted if you're inside a car that's hit by lightning (google "Faraday cage" if you want to know why). But, as they found out, it can fry the electrics and possibly start a fire, although in this case I think the smoke they reported was more likely to be dust from the airbags that deployed. Airplanes, BTW, often get struck by lightning and it's rarely a problem.
