On our local news a story about a garage & home fire. It started in the garage. Thankfully the people got out ok but they lost everything. Everybody has heard it over & over, be careful with anything flamable. It's so easy to forget or overlook something when you're quiting for the day. Even with insurance some things can't be replaced, especially a life.

On the way home from picking up my son tonight we drove by a house fire. It was fully engulfed and the fire crew was just getting there. I felt really bad for those folks. Adding batteries to my shopping list for tomorrow (to replace all of them in our smoke and carbon monoxide detectors).

Thank you both for the reminder, and i just got done changing batteries on all my smoke-alarms. Good thing i am a pack rat and stockpile batteries, had enough 9Vs to do the job.

I checked our smoke detectors recently and just added two 5LB extinguishers in the shop for safety. I firmly believe that any garage that is used for anything other than parking the car and storing the snow shovel should be detached from the house. I wouldn't have a shop attached to my house...at least not one where I might weld and keep flammable goods. I suppose lots of guys might not have another option and that's unfortunate.
I've got another 2-1/2 lb extinguisher that I am getting re-charged for the house.

A few years back there was a fire in Kirkland, a suburb of Seattle. It started in the garage and took the whole house to the ground, as well as destroying the Ferrari in the garage. The house was very similar in design to mine, that is a split level with the garage on the lower level under the bedrooms. It turned out that the owner kept a 55-gallon drum of gasoline in the garage for some unknown reason. I forget what they determined actually started the blaze, but needless to say, when the fire reached the drum of gas, it was all over. Nobody was hurt, but the home was a total loss.

edit: I found an article about it. Unfortunately, the picture isn't there any more.
