Water Base Clear Coat Spray?????

Hello All,

I just sprayed a mailbox & installed vinyl decals on it ( address) on the side.

I was going to clear over the decals with Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch 2XModel # 249117
12 oz. Gloss Clear General Purpose Spray Paint.

The person who made the deals warned me that if the clear is nor water based the decals will be destroyed.


I can't seem to find a water base clear coat in a spray bomb.. The decals are affixed to a metal mailbox.


Any advice??

Ayuh,.... Skip the clear coat, 'n don't worry 'bout it,....

Decals don't last forever, 'n it sounds like clear coatin' 'em will hasten their demise,.....

I've used this stuff before. It's water based and in a spray can. However, it's going to protect against water and such, but it wont protect against the sun. You need something with UV protection for that. I'm not sure if Minwax makes any like that.

I'm leaning to just applying a coat of wax over the decal/box to repel the rain.

Pick a clear coating product and try it before you do it for real. Practice makes perfect.

I wouldn't clear over the vinyl decals, wax would be fine. The clear won't bridge the thickness of the decal and would create a zone to trap moisture and look terrible in a short period of time.

Can't say for sure about your particular decals, but I overspray vinyl timing tapes on crank dampers with 2-3 coats of clear Rustolem or Duplicolor and they last for years. 10s of years.
