Water filtration system filter used on compressed air system

Crazy topic of the day.

I have been given a Whirlpool water filtration system designed for whole house use. The system appears to be rated at 120 PSI. I am thinking about filling this with desiccant and running the unit as secondary unit after a pressure regulator set at 110 PSI. The capacity of this thing is approximately one gallon. Keep in mind that I have no money currently invested.

Isn’t that same as asking about pvc air line.

I would rig up something like the two inch pipe with a drain on the bottom output on top and the air input about 1/2 way a screen about 1/3 from bottom to keep the bead from bottom.

Probably safer and cheaper.

HF used to sell something like this years ago except it’s a 1” pipe or maybe it was a 1.5”

plumbed in backwards with a wound yarn filter you'd have a coalescing filter.. but having said that when a water system lets go at 120 psi, water being non compressible is rather polite. A compressed gas at 120 psi is a bomb.

If your unit is plastic a metal cage is in order, the oil out of most reciprocating compressors can seriously degrade many plastics. Plan accordingly

Remember that water pressure ratings are based on the fact, that at lower pressures, water is considered incompressible. Gasses are compressible always, and can generate and carry pressure spikes up to hundreds of times the static pressure...

That's pretty much what I figured. While the top is aluminum and the bowl quite thick, I questioned the true psi pressure rating with compressed air. The oil compatibility is also a valid point.

The compressability thing is what 99.5% of people touting pvc for air lines do not understand. Snap that trigger closed on your air tool and you can impart a shock transient back down the hose and to the tank that is hundreds of psig....

I have a friend who has had two water filter canisters bust and flood her kitchen. That's with a pressure regulator set at 60 lbs. This is a very bad idea unless you like bombs.
