Water heater cold supply leak - name that part

The cold water shutoff valve to my ao smith gas fired water heater is leaking as you can see. I recall being told the name if the part of the valve that is leaking and can be replaced.

In my parts I've heard them called "stop and waste valve". ??

Shut the water off and drain, remove the bleeder screw, clean it up, reinstall... There is an O-ring that will need to be replaced.

That's a stop with drain. unnecessary in that application . the rubber gasket is breaking down.

Globe valve. 1st I'd see if the handle will turn to shut water off.
If it doesnt function replace it with a full port ball valve.
If it still works I'd shut it down and drain water above valve.
Then throw some teflon tape on fitting and screw cap back on,then go on with life.

Thanks everybody it always helps to know the name of what you’re looking for.

as it turned out my great local hardware store sells just the bleeder cap and rubber gasket alone and replacing that with a little bit of thread sealant did the ttrick

Fix one problem and another pops up. I closed and opened the valve while fixing the leaking bleeder and now the shaft of the valve stem is leaking a bit. Are these serviceable ?

Try snuggling up the packing nut on stem behind handle,that's normal when they havent been used in a long time.

As for that drain cap, some are not removalable ! Just saying.
The drip on valve stem is from valve packing. Some have a packing gland under that outside nut. If you loosen nut and slide up you may see valve packing material. You can roll Teflon tape like a Twizzler and lay inside. Or easier to hold nut up and make a few wraps around stem and thread. Then snug nut, doesn't need to be tight.
