Water heater gas control valve replacement help please

Hi all I have an AO Smith GCVL 40 300 with a Honeywell WV8840B1109 gas control valve which is exhibiting "5-blink" temp sensor error that can't be cleared by resetting. I've not worked on the heater before and can't find a definitive guide to fitting a replacement. Searching WV8840B1109 sends me here which lists this as the replacement.

I can call around on Monday but wanted to ask if anyone here knows another resource to figure this out.

Any other parts I may want to have on hand ?

Finally - the gas shut off valve is not a style I'm familiar with. Does anyone recognize this and is it a conventional quarter-turn style shutoff?

umm isnt 5 blinks a temp sensor (which may be part of the burner)?

Yes temp sensor. I thought that is what is attached to the backside of the gas control valve which threads thru the tank itself. Isn't the thermocouple the part attached to the burner?

Remove the temperature sensor and clean it. Often times this works.

I thought that would show as a thermopile or flame sensor error but happy to try the easy stuff first.

you will need to replace the controler easy to do
secure gas disconnect gas - shut off supply water - drain down some water pop the relief - prep the new control tape and sealent- loosen the old valve--now quickly remove the old valve and install the new one very little water will come out when you pull the old one out you create an air pocket

The temperature sensor this refers to is the water probe, It is built into the gas valve. You will need a new gas valve.
If the thermopile was bad you would get an 8 flash code or the flash 2

edit, i notice that you have a black 90 "looks like" going into the valve. you may want to add a drip leg for sediment to drop into.
so put a T then into the valve, then small ****** to valve. if you replace the valve or just change out the water heater i would add one. sometimes these valves are expensive to replace.

for the shutoff, There is nothing wrong with it. It is just used to shut the water heater down for servicing and working on the heater.
