I was wondering if anyone has had to change one in their water heater due to part failure? I understand these are easy to change, also understand what causes their failure. However wondering how common these fail due to age and being heated and cooled so many times across the lifetime of a water heater. Reading online it seems like these shouldn't fail (unless overheating due to poor venting) but that doesn't seem like that would be the case. My current heater is about 10 years old and had this trip today, guess ill clean vent really well and see how long a replacement lasts.

Have you done any recent interior oil painting or staining?

Check your manual for the water heater on how to do a reset on the flammable vapor sensor. The units I am familiar with were power vent water heaters (Rheem). The procedure was something like power off and unplug, wait 30 seconds, set to "start", plug power back in, then twist the temp dial quickly from start to max, back to start then max, etc for 6 times then it would reset and start up normally.

Our new homes have sand on site traditional hardwood. The fumes from stain and polyurethane would trip the sensor 9/10 homes.

There's air intake holes at the bottom of the heater, and/or along the bottom perimeter depending on the manufacturer.

If the little holes are blocked, it trips the sensor.
