So how high do I need to raise a natural gas heater from the floor and what type of material will pass code to elevate the the tank? I want to use a metal type of a stand. I have been told 18 inches. That seems a bit high. Does that fall under a plumber code or a gas code?

Minimum height above floor is 18" to prevent the heater's burner from igniting any acumulated gasoline fumes.

It's both American Gas Assoc and Propane Assoc requirement.

A couple concrete blocks stacked on top of each other with a 2"slab across them works well.

Franz, you should be ashamed of your last post! A couple of left over blocks? The most knowledgeable person on this sight. you should be designing a stand to make this look like a pro job!

Your local plumbing supply store will have metal stands specifically for this purpose. Don't forget to strap the WH to the wall in case of earthquake!

2 blocks and a precast slab were good enough for the boiler in my cellar, and 4 blocks and a salb work well for a garage water heater. Some things stands are appropriate for, and others they ain't.

You ever see a set of stationary tubs come over when the crappy angle iron stand rusts just enough? Funny as hell unless you are the guy who has to clean it up.

Anything with a flame needs to be up 18" , my father in law had a furance put in his garage right on the ground level but that was like 20 years ago when there was no code for it. Never had a problem though with the flame being that low.
