Water hose reel

I just bought this steel wall-mount hose reel that says it will hold 200 feet of 5/8" garden hose:

http://www.libertygardenproducts.com/product_703.htm

It arrived yesterday and upon inspection, I immediately saw a few problems with it. The galvanized tee was placed outside the reel, not inside. This caused me to have to wrap the hose over the spool wheel before I could start cranking. Another thing I noticed is a wad of excessive teflon tape obstructing inside the tee fitting. Apparently someone at the Chinese factory did not know a thing about quality control. Lastly but not the least ... the inner diameter of the spool reel is too small for my 3/4" commercial duty hose:

http://www.teknorapex.com/division/hose/apex-hoses/landscape-watering-hoses/hot-water-hose

The reel would wrap this large diameter hose so tightly that it will leave quite a memory effect on the hose. Not good. It probably would have been fine for 1/2" standard duty hose but definitely not for 3/4" commercial duty hose. Even though this reel will hold 100 feet of 3/4" thick hoses (barely), I think I will need to send this back.

Can anyone recommend me a good quality wall-mount water hose reel (hand crank) that have large inner diameter spool to accompany large hoses? An USA made unit would be a big plus.

Another question ... even though the hoses I have are 3/4" ... are the brass ends in the size of 1/2" NPT?? I've been doing some searching and am a bit confused when I saw some reels being available with 1/2" and 3/4" NPT.

Rapid Reel makes a nice reel. Their 1041X model will hold up to 225' of 5/8" hose or 170' of 3/4" hose.

Rapid Reels were USA made prior to 2003. The USA made reels were much nicer. I liked that the older reels had a steel plate that you bolted to the wall. Then the reel hooked on to the plate. This allowed to you easily bring in your hose reel during the winter. They also used to offer conversion kits so that you could use them for compressed air hose and also kits to convert them for electrical extension cords. The USA reels were also available in several powered coated colors.

I have two of the older USA reels in my garage, one is used for water and the other is used for air.

I have one of the newer rapid reels on my rear deck and it's nice, but not as nice as the original ones were.

Pretty happy with my Eley reel. Can't remember if it is made in USA. Eley used to be known as RapidReel. My unit is aluminum and made for storing hose outdoors.

Rapid reel, eley, and triton are all the same product/mfgr. According to eley website, in 2006 they redesigned and sent mfg to China and put it under the name Triton. They used to be made near me, not any more :(

I have 4 of the old USA made units, they are top notch. I'll buy more used old ones before I buy the Chinese one!

Sad to see they caved in to the "bottom dollar" misconception instead of selling their top notch American made product for what it was worth and continuing to support American jobs.

USA made rapid reel here as well. That thing is great. It lives outdoors and can take a licking.

How can you tell the difference between an old USA model and the new china stuff?

I want to look for a used USA model.

Hannay is another manufacturer. Their equipment is very common throughout the fire service. Good stuff but the price shows it.

The biggest problem I find with all of these hose reels is that they have 5/8 (or smaller) inlet piping. I prefer to use 3/4" on the car, and using one of these hose reels means there will always be a bottleneck preventing a 3/4" inch flow. Anyone around ever seen a hose reel with 3/4" inlet piping? Or an I missing something?

You can get a 3/4" NPT hose reel from Coxreels. Made in Arizona, industrial grade, and priced to match. They have them in Hand Crank or motor driven.

117-5-100 3/4" x 100' List price $228.00 This is the lighter duty model.
1125-5-100 3/4" x 100' List price $312.00 This one will last a life time.

You will need to adapt from NPT thread to GHT to fit the hose.

After looking for an original USA Rapid Reel I finally snagged one and it's on it's way. They are tough to find in red as I wanted one to match my brick exterior.

I'd like to do a red matching shelf above mine as well. Wondering what brand/model you have in the second picture?
