Based on the comments of this fine forum, I picked up a beautiful Craftman Pro rubber water hose (100 ft).

I'm now in the market for a hose reel. The hose will mostly be used for water the back lawn; watering the flowers and washing the cars.

Since my wife refuses to coil the hose back in its place, I've decided to try getting a hose reel.

How are these? Has anybody tried to "automatic" version? If the hose can be reeled back in with little effort, I might win this battle with my wife.

Thanks for any info.

It is nice quality, made from steel.

Is a permanantly mounted real your only option? I've seen a couple of the nicer roll arounds that would allow you to use your "best" hose on multiple faucets. Griots has a pretty nice one though I've seen the same unit under different names for much less.

I have both of the Griot's air and water reels and like them. They had an early version of the air reel which failed on me; they replaced it with the newer version which has held up for several years so far.

The Griot's one is from Australia and seems to be a well-made unit. I'm sure sharp shopping might find the same unit for less, but if the price delta isn't too much, I'll order from a place that has better customer service like Griot's.

coxreels makes one for garden hose (hand crank though) and its built insanely well and Id be surprised if you couldnt pass the thing on to your grandkids at some point. A friend of mine has one in his garage and its very nice, but probably very pricey.
