I am going to shut the water off and replace the unit tomorrow..........wish me luck
This filter is only 8 feet from the main water supply line and there is a new valve there

I cut a small block of wood, to mount the support bracket to, between the joists

I was not aware the canister should only be finger tight, I was using the wrench before to tighten it down..........the wrench should only be used to loosen the canister, got it

I took the old one off, with ease

The NPT fittings going into the head were not threaded on enough, in my opinion

I cut and screwed in a 2x6, between the joists......for the mounting bracket

Glad I bought the $7 bracket, it makes the filter kit so much more secure than my old setup

I used Teflon tape and a small amount of water safe pipe dope and screwed the NPT fittings into the filter head

I could not get the compression sleeves to budge.........so I gambled and connected the barrel nuts to the fittings. I did not use any tape or pipe dope.

I used a small amount of the Hercules grease on the oring and hand tightened the canister.........turned the water on

I had a very small amount of water leaking from the backside of the nuts, that slide over the compression rings and connect to the fittings that went into the head

Using two crescent wrenches, I tightened the down a tad more.......an hour later, a small leak from both sides

I tightened them down more, and they are pretty darn tight........how tight is too tight?

Think the compression rings are crushed too much and need replacing? They seem to be fused on to the 3/4 copper pipe

I used a longer pipe wrench today, while using a smaller crescent on the NPT fitting

Seemed like the added grip of the larger pipe wrench coupled with the long handle gave me some good leverage.........was able to turn each of the compression nut about 1/4" or 3/8" tighter

I will see how this does and if the slight leak dries up

All dry for 6 days now, thanks for the help and pointers

The mounting bracket was a great addition, its rock solid when mounted to the 2x6
