I am currently looking at a Wayne two stage compressor. The guy selling it had it rebuilt a couple years ago but has not used it. He paid $485 for the rebuild. He will sell it to me for that price with the choice of any of three 80 gallon tanks he has. It needs a 5hp single phase motor and pulley which I priced locally at an electric motor shop. Is it worth it? I am going to be painting a couple cars I'm restoring. He said when he looked into it he was getting cfm numbers of 20-22. Or should I just buy a brand new one?
Thank you,
Bill

Any documentation on the rebuild? It could be ok, but the tank could require new plumbing from the pump, new motor is 350 ish. All in with oil, plumbing, pressure switch, motor starter, new pulley, belts, yada yada, you are creeping up over a grand. I would want to see the compressor build pressure and time it for actual CFM.

That's kinda how I was thinking to be honest. I know all the odds and ends of it will add up to costing the same or more than a brand new one that I can take off the truck and it's ready to go. The other route requires hours of my time I'd rather be spending working on my car.

I have a compressor addiction. I bought 2 80 gal champions for 250 bucks. They were complete. One 3 phase, one single. I sold the 3 phase for 250 bucks. I have about 75 bucks into the single phase. Deals are out there. If you were going to spend 6-700 on a used 80 gallon, it better work , damn well. Just my .o2

It really depends on what you want to do. You mentioned you don't want a compressor project. I like them.

Not sure how consuming painting is, but will you be sandblasting and running a sander? If so, pony up for the CFM now and be done with it. Comes down to usage/budget. Good luck!

I don't plan on sandblasting but can't say I won't for sure. What is recommended for this?

Although after looking at prices I think I would end up with the better compressor in the long run if I built it using the rebuilt. The guy I would get it from is a retired motor builder. He was setting it up for his own garage as well as the rotary lift I bought from him last year. His garage unfortunately burnt to the ground with a couple Harley's and a 65 Buick I believe. The compressor was in his mothers garage. He also has a Devilbiss that is rebuilt but it's already set up with a 3 phase motor. That one would be $900.

if you buy used, It's hard to set a dollar amt. b/c you don't know what compressor deal will pop up. These compressors new will be 1800 plus. Is that's in the cards, then look new if it fits your needs. Sounds like you could "grow" into A 5 Hp. If your budget is tighter, there about 3 threads a week about which compressor to search through. This dude sounds like a good guy and all, but doesn't have a good deal on an air compressor for you, IMO

I will see what he's throwing in as well, he mentioned extra stuff. It works good for me money wise, it's easier to spend $500 at a time. Something about dropping $2000 on something in one shot always seems like more to me. I want to keep some for car parts also as I don't need the compressor just yet.

OK,I got some info from seller. Its a Wayne 5000 series. It says 5233 on the plate and also says with the small pulley its 15-18cfm and with the large pulley its 20-22cfm. Does anyone have any info on that?
