Wayne dalton issues

Hello, I am having some issues with my 18'x8' garage door on my house. Ever since moving in last year that door seemed to have too much up tension on the door. It has the tourque master springs on it. The door regularly would stop and reverse 6 inches from the bottom of the track. I checked the counters on the springs and they were set at 18 which should be correct for an 8' door. Can anyone recommend something to try on my own to adjust this? Should I release the tension and reset it or can I lower it to 17? My wane dalton opener seems like the gear is stripping (something else I need to fix). would this up pressure cause that?

Sorry much more familiar with a torsion setup than this brand.

Wayne-Dalton no longer sell or makes openers since they were sold to Overhead Door.
I had the I-drive and it was problematic and I removed it.

I had the same spring system and opener and got rid of it because of the same problem. It's an adjustment problem with the opener not the spring tension. I have same size door and the tension was set at 18. Try resetting the limits on the opener.

I had a Wayne Dalton door...I HATED it....it went up and down just fine. No problems there. It just sagged badly when open and the two middle sections when it was closed bowed inwards. I called and called and pretty much got the runaround.....Called the lumberyard where it came from and they put me in touch with their rep. and he did call me back but he was unwilling to help me in any way to deal with this issue....nothing like cold air and LOTS of snow blowing past the door strips because the door was bowing inwards. I don't care what they make or don't make anymore.. they won't get a dollar of my money if I can help it!!

Try your door on manual to see if it feels light off the floor. If it does, yes tension can be taken off the springs. I worked for Wayne Dalton for many years. My opinion is they never made an opener worth a ****! That being said if you can find the gear, it is repairable. Good luck..

thanks guys for all the input so far. checking on the gear tomorrow looks like i might try to fix it for a while but really not fond of the opener either. Probably worth it to get a pro to check the door balance, it really takes some effort to push it down manually when fully open, and really springs up if it is higher than 2 feet off the floor also. I thought the tourquemaster springs were supposed to be eaiser/safer for a diy to work on but they really like an odd setup the more i look at them. I would love to put a liftmaster 8500 on the door, but not sure if its in the cards to get the opener and have to convert the springs etc.

Check your Torque Tube, there should be a label that tells you door size, spring size etc. They may have installed the wrong tube. Having glass in the top section will also make a difference.

The 18 is a starting point. In the manual mode open the door half way and see if the door will stay. Adjust the tension so that the door is neutral in the 1/2 open position. This is not that difficult to do. If you find the tension too much reduce to 17.5 then 17 and so on.

After your happy with the balance your going to have to reprogram the opener. Depending on which model and version of the WD opener you have this is pretty easy to do. Most just had a reset that opens and closes the door 2 full cycles and stops.

I once had 4 single doors and all 4 had WD openers. Every door had a slightly different number on the tension once they were all balanced. One of the openers NEVER gave me any problems. One had more issues than the other 3 combined so they all varied.
