I am looking for really effecient ways to organize all my tools in my garage. For example (bench grinder on stand located next to what?:, cut off saw where, etc.......). Anyone know of any good spots to look for plans?

Darkside, my first question would be .. how much room do you have?

I know there are "plans" for "efficent layouts"; but it will depend on what kind of work your going to do the most of, and how you can fit everything into the available space.

My shop is small; (24 x 17 feet) especially with my "hot rod" project sitting in it, and TRYING! to use all my tools. Some of my "tools" are on castors (e.g. - grinding station) and it gets stored under a bench and pulled out from underneath when needed.
My air compressor is on the second story of my shop so it doesn't "eat up" valuable space.

I could go on; but I think you get the idea. There is nothing "engraved in stone" as being the BEST layout. It's what ever works best for YOU!

Like Digger Dave said... Casters are our friends... Everything in my shop is on casters... Even my welding chair... This just made sense to me as I have complete access to every tool or work bench I own and it makes for an easy time cleaning the shop... Plus the shop is re-organizable to your hearts content...
I buy most of my casters from Harbour Freight but have found real good deals on them at swap meets and fleamarkets also..
Here is a link to my Fotki Album...

Mark, ain't it the truth! I just did a "rough count"; and I came up with 54!!
(20 alone for 4 office chairs, for "scooting" around the shop! I have a "bum" leg)

Opps .. forgot the engine hoist and the engine stand; (outside at the moment) make that 64!

Oh, then there is the four on the body dolly!! (8" air type)

I don't want to hi-jack darksides post but that sounds like a challenge!
I counted at least 48 items throughout my shops that have casters on them...:lol_hitti
That puts my count at around 192...
Now that doesn't include the free range casters that are waiting to be bolted down of which I have another dozen or so.:bounce:
My wife thinks my dream job would be working quality control at a caster manufacturing plant... I would be the head caster-rater...

WOW! Is there any floor left visable?? :yikes:

Mark I actually didn't mean to challenge; but I think you and I may have got the idea across to Darkside; that the MORE castors you have on things; tools, tables, chairs, benches - anything that CAN be relocated to a different location (position) makes for a FAR MORE flexible shop layout.

Like I said at the begining; "Nothing is engraved in stone!" (just put castors under it) :)

Just wandered around your site. You wern't kidding; that's a LOT of castors!
Also spot were both "A" fans. Mine's a '28 Tudor Hiboy, Flathead powered with a S.C.o.T. blower on top. Body done, frame almost and engine on the stand.

Hey Dave, It sounds like your "A" is further along then mine... I have been gathering parts though and have a good idea of what it will look like when it is "finished"...
I was wrong on my caster count also... I did some additional counting and came up with 210 casters being used in my shop.:wtf:

An option. The floor plan may be bigger than you are prepared to copy, but the floor plan is very open, organized and functional.

Sears also has a shop planner on their website.I would also suggest you use a sheet of construction paper cut to the size of the garage and smaller cutouts(all done in scale)to develop a layout. The drawback is that you must remember to leave the walkways and acess.

I think Astroracer is hooked on caster-bation!
