Ok so the whole time I have been fixing up our new home, I have been dropping hints as to what I was going to do with the garage to my wife and father in-law. Now its time, and I have started with the garage. The sheetrock is up and I have one coat of paint on the walls. My family and friends think Im suffering from some sort of dimencha (sp). It was a scene from (one flew over the cookoo's nest) when I told them I was putting VCT flooring in it. Now my family have always know Im Mr. Organized when it comes to my garage, but up until now I havent really had an ideal spot for my tools, So I figure Im gonna make it the way I have wanted for so long. My point is my family thinks Im nuts, they think its a waste of money (wife has been pretty cool about it though). How much resistance have you guys ran across in your garage builds, and how many have laughed at you. I know Im not the only one who has done this to a garage otherwise this site and many others would not exist. I just know around here fixing up a garage isnt to common.

yes you are crazy...
take your meds and things will be fine
you should also finish the garage in the way you want so that they will have a place to keep you keep you when you go completly over the edge

my wife does not complain about the garage or the tools as she has figured out that every time she wants something fixed, built, or done it is the garage that makes it happen

Show them the picture that was posted here from the guy in England that put ceramic tile on the floors and ceilings of his garage. As far as being crazy...well we're all probably a little nuts! LOL. :eyecrazy:Hey it's your garage though, tell them to mind their own business. ;) We support you in your efforts.

its only a waste of money because you will only get half of your money back that you invested in garage improvments when you sell your home as opposed to other home projects that will double or triple your investment. what some people do not reliaze though is that flashy garage might just sell the house.

but if you are like us, you spend a lot of time in the garage so why not be comfortable? most people who think fixing up a garage is crazy are the same people who park in their driveway because their garage is full of garbage and other **** or, the've never turned a wrench in their life.

i have had no opposition form my wife, just lack of money....lol.

My friend stopped by with his friend.
When they left his friend ask him why I had put ceramic tile in my garage.
My friend replied,"He watches Bob Vila too much." :)

I'm going to retire in about 30 months. I'll be 62, have my 30 yrs. in, no children, wife and I have always worked, saved our money, and I'm going. I want to put up another garage/pole barn so I can have a dedicated, heated shop. I got the land(5 acres), but the wife says, "You aren't putting up another garage". Well, with her or without her I going to put it up. She can then decide what she wants to do.

As long as the wife is on board and you can pay all of your bills, who cares if your family thinks its a waste of money? I wouldn't go into debt to finish the inside of my garage.

My wife is like rsanter's. She wants things done around the house. She knows it takes tools and a place to use those tools to make her projects possible.

She's been saying recently that she wants a freezer in the garage. No problem, I can make one of those fit but we're going to need to add a power receptacle. If I'm adding a receptacle for a freezer, I'm adding others to make my life easier since our builder only included two in the garage.

The great thing about it is that by her making a request here and there, I've got a greenlight for insulation, heating, drywall, lighting, power, cabinets / shelves, etc. She's all for decorating signs and banners too. I just need a cash infusion to make it happen.

My wife only has two requests about finishing the garage. 1. Don't neglect other projects around the house. 2. Don't waste money on the garage by not planning everything out (do it once) or buying cheap stuff that will break or wear out easily.

Im in a pretty decent shape on being able to recoop my money off my garage. I know somebody will say that I will not be able to make my money back from the garage. Well I can and will (provided we ever sell the house). I bought a foreclosed home for 75% of its current value at the time. It had sat for a couple of years and was in bad need of renovations. It was actually in 1 of the 5 or 6 great neighbor hoods in the town. Close to the schools and centrally located. Needless to say I was given a large sum of free money and that covered all our renovations. So for what we gave for the house and for what we have done to the house, (keep in mind I have 0 dollars in renovation cost) we have added an extra 80k in equity to the home. I should be covered on what ever out of pocket money I spend on the garage :) I dont think Ill have a problem getting any of my money back as long as I dont go to the utmost extreme.

The garage is very much like the kitchen.....besides the bedroom, what room in the house do you spend the most time....Kitchen.....

Well, the garage is the same....you can't do woodworking in the kitchen....well, you could assuming you like a lot of fiber in your food.....

The key is to make sure the family understands how the garage fits in...my wife is very much on board...and can't wait for it to be finished either....partially because her art studio is going to be up on the second floor.....For us, the garage is one way we get the kids out of the house and away from the TV....but it also helps that I have a detached garage in the back yard......

I'm the same way and my wife backs me 100%. She's just as anxious to get the house garage redone as I am, if not more.

My wife and family back me up. Some of my family is jealous. When asking directions to my house they all say you can't miss the house with room for seven cars inside.

I think a nice garage would sell a house if the guy is a car guy or does woodworking.

I got a fair amount of **** from my ex-wife's family when I started my shop build. I figure that I spent less per year than they did on golf and cruises - both of which were pretty much excuses for them to drink excessively - and had a lot more to show for my money, labor, and time...

I hear you. When I built my 24x36 recently, Some of the non-mechanically inclined folks on my wife's side of the family were asking "What do need that much space for?" and "Don't you ever just relax?" (Of course these are people who essentially do nothing constructive on weekends).

A friend of mine put carpet in his garage where he parked his Porsche. I thought that was pretty crazy.

Your post reminded of the song where the guys wife told him he would either have to give up fishing or her. I think the name of the song is "I'm Sure Going to Miss Her"

My wife's family and even neighbors thought that a lift was not needed. Now they are the same one's that ask me to look at their cars or do periodic maintenance. Anyway, next up is a garage heater, which I'm sure will also come with some resistance and dismay. However, I'm sure my wife will like the fact that the kids can go play in the warm garage in the middle of winter.

Hang in there and do what you need to do to get your garage set up. There's nothing like working in an organized shop with the proper tools, equipment, lights, and plenty of outlets. I'd rather spend money on fixing up a place that truly serves a purpose as oppose to just blowing it on golf or other stuff that's quickly forgotten.

My friends and I used to call the folks who don't play with cars and tools "Normals".
Then we had a rethink. It's us that are normal and them that are the crazies.
