I had 2 guys install my AC system today.
It is a no name 18000 (1.5 ton) system.
Seems to cool off the 440 sq. ft garage fast.

220 v and 18 seer.

Seems to work quite well. Very quiet and smooth.
For the brutal winters here in TX it also has electric heat.

Looks like one of the mini-split high seer units like fujitsu or others. I know some here on this forum really like those. I am planning one for my lake home.

Nice to see another mini-split system.

I have a Sanyo 2-ton system on my roof which I installed myself.

Sooo much better than central air, aka "dust pumps". Much quieter too!

I gotta ask, cause I am at 600 sq ft and considering similar - what did it run you all told?

warranty?

I paid 800 for the unit. I think the same would work for you well in AUS.
The guy that sells them is on craigslist dallas.
I got mine for less because mine was the unit that has hung on the wall
for example.

I have used it for 1 day and it seems to work well.

I got a similar size Mitsubishi unit. I paid about 1200 for it I think including the lineset. Did the majority of the install myself, but had some guys come evacuate the lines and charge it. They charged me like 250 bucks just to do that...

800 sounds like a good price to me. How much did they charge for the install, if you don't mind me asking?

I paid 400 for the install.
That included electrical, installation and vacume down the system.
I could have paid 50 just to have the system sucked down.

Ok install, I would have done better but I am too **** and slow.
I just paid it and had it done.

That's a heck of deal in my opinion.

Honestly, it wasn't even really the money that drove me to do the install myself. I mostly didn't want some idiots in my garage looking around at what they'd like to steal. Sad commentary on the state of the world, but true.

I felt the SAME way on the ADT door to door guys coming around the other day. They knocked on the door, and I went out the garage to greet them. They tried to sell me on alarms, and I said we had dogs. They said "what, that little puppy barking?" and I told them the other was bigger and doesn't bark unless they are told to. (which is true, he's a BC)

They continued to press on, and I told them to get off my property. This is TX, I can shoot you if you don't.

I just installed a Ramsond 18,000 btu split heatpump unit with an Electric Strip, looks almost like yours the inside unit is configured a little different! I did it all electrical, mounting and hooking up the lines. It works great! Did yours come with a remote to run the unit this thing even has remote controlled vent adjusters! I paid 1185 including shipping and it came complete!

How does that thing affect your power bill, considering we just had the hottest June ever?

What size unit did you get, and what size is your garage? I'm thinking about an 18k btu unit for a 600 sq ft fully insulated garage (in Houston).

Brutal winters - Dallas - you funny guy! Nice split, well done. My 12K window/wall unit in the shop has been hard at it since June. I don't wanna see this months electric bill.

Can you pass that gents name on to me? I have been looking at split units for my new home that we close on this coming Monday. It is on my list of stuff to have done before I come home in August for R&R.

I have even emailed the city of Haslet (where we are buying) and asked about code enforecment issues with these units.

We need two 12K units, the garage is 875sqft now and I am adding an additional 375' in a few months.

Thanks in advance. Enjoy your nice Texas heat and cool garage, highs today in Afghanistan hit 105*

We're at 105 right now, 104 yesterday. I've seen 118 at the drag strip already and that was back in June. We be not chillin'. Thank you for your service in foreign lands.

I had my highest electricity bill ever this June. :shocking: But I can't say for sure it's all from the garage, I got a kegerator (in the house) and the wife's home all day with the baby so the AC is running more, too and the TV is on all day. Also, I just finally finished the attic insulation (R25) during mid-June as well as the garage door and that should help quite a bit. I usually run it Thursday or Friday night through Sunday night, leave it off on the weekdays.

What size unit did you get, and what size is your garage? I'm thinking about an 18k btu unit for a 600 sq ft fully insulated garage (in Houston).

I got the 17K btu unit, Mitsubishi, and my garage is 400 sqft. I would tell you that I would go even bigger if I was to do it again and here's why. If you leave all the doors closed then this 17k unit does great, cools it to ~70 something on a hot day in my little garage. But the problem is if you get to welding, cutting, grinding etc and you get fumes in there. I open the doors periodically to ventilate and then it's tough to get it cool again.

I read all this stuff about how it won't dehumidify correctly if you have too big of a unit, and did some calculators to see what size I needed (and felt I got a slightly oversized unit). But I think those are assuming that you run it all the time with the doors closed, in a house type setting.

Admittedly, I have a strong tendency to over-engineer stuff, but I'd sure consider going bigger with your mini-split for a 600 sqft garage, based on my experience, if you can fit it in the budget.

Thanks...I'm considering a 24k unit now with a DC inverter/variable speed fan. That way, I would assume that the unit can "self-regulate" based on the cooling requirements. If I open the door and the heat rushes in, it can run at full capacity; if I've been sealed up in the shop all day, it can run at a lower capacity.
