Hi - im new here and have been spending wayyy too much time reading so many excellent excellent threads. Im a nutcase when it comes to tools, classic vehicles, shops so many things. If i could get paid to read and post in all the forums i frequent - then maybe id have the money to buy all the stuff i find in the forums i frequent!

Today - im in a full blown hydraulic floor jack obsession - its been lurking - but now its out. I started my wrenching lifestyle 20 yrs ago or more when i was in college looking out the window wishing i knew how to work with my hands. I dropped out - got on w a house framing crew and have been going balls out crazy ever since. I have a wicked awesome wife - thats for sure.

I have a few vintage Blackhawks - S4 (w light), SJ-18 and another i just sent the money out today on CL - how im going to get it from Seattle im not sure yet but im closer here in Oregon then I was in Texas so thats good. It is a long body model before swivel casters. I also have a Hein Werner frame lift - not a cheesy new one - forgot the model number. And as i used to be a snap on dealer in texas - i do have 2 of their badass (for todays standards) heavy floor jacks. But its the Weaver 10 Ton I bought for $75 2 yrs ago that I am working on and need some help.

I have installed the seal kit from Castle Equipment and i think thats all going to function well. I have the parts diagrams but they are somewhat unclear as concerns how some parts go together. Turns out I am missing the "Return Guide Assembly" which returns the pedal to upright. I want to know if anyone has this part that they can take a picture of bc previous owner - i think - added a piece that either shouldnt be there or should be but diagram drawing sux.

As well, directly opposite this return assembly is the "Plunger Return Rod" and mine is shot but I still would like to see a functioning setup bc it attaches to body with a 90 degree turn and a cotter pin but just stabs/seats into a recess in the lower handle casting. If it works it works but im really into attaching things. So if anyone can flip that bad boy on its side and snap a few shots of these 2 systems - i sure would appreciate it.

I should snap some pics too - but damn i am always running - i will do it in a bit (delegate to my kids).

Thanks yall.

Nice old jack, Just finished one at work. Those rods and springs work at their best if wire wheeled clean and bright. All parts must rotate smoothly for the foot pedal to snap back up easy. Some of those parts can still be bought and we have spare used stuff saved. Those rods can be made if needed. You are looking for WA-75 stuff most likely Compress the springs on the rod in a vice then hold doun with vicegrips untill all of it is in place. With the unit apart watch for rust/pitting in the bottom side of the tube. Condensate settles on the bottom and rusts the tube. New tube VERY spendy!!

I can snap some pics when I get home, it's fairly common to see the return spring brackets broken. It's a very small piece of metal and I normally just weld a washer in its place. I've never seen any issues with rust causing the spring to not slide, it's set at a pretty high tension when installed between the stops. Most of the time the pump piston packing nut has been overtigntened causing the foot pedal to drag, versus return normally.

Thanks for the replies. I ran out and took a few pics of the weaver and others. None of my tabs are broken - i broke the plunger return rod last night straightening it - it was bent at the hole so i was expecting it. i could weld it - or make it - im making an order anyway and dont mind paying the $12 for a new one. I am wondering still about the the pedal return rod - i see a clevis on the end in the parts diagram drawing but nothing at the other end which i assume stabs into the bracket with a hole on the frame. One end attaches with a clevis - how does the other end attach??

IIRC... The return rod connects at the rear with 90 degree bend/cotter key and the other end protrudes through bracket that the spring rests against. I'm Away from home but I'll snap a picture when I get back. Castle equipment is great to deal with, I almost always send everyone in search of parts to them.

Hiball if u cld just take a pic of the underside like the one i posted showing the 2 return rods and how they are mounted at both ends with correct parts - that wld help a lot.

Sorry my pics - the ones above and below - are not that great - i was in a hurry - and my shop is messy as im re-organizing it while trying to finish a few (hundred) open projects.

Below are the other jacks i mentioned. The S4 has the lens but was missing a caster which i found the other day nos but paid a premium for it (and another as i want a spare). I have 2 S4s and i was down at the scrap yard the other day and they get carcass old jacks constantly and will start holding them to the side for me so i can take parts. I can find needle in the haystack obsolete harley parts easier then these jack parts! (not at the scrap yard though). The Hein Werner is a Model 55-R 1.5T jack and i love these style jacks bc i run 50s cars and trucks as dailys and this style jack will pick a 57 chev up in one shot allowing me to remove rear wheels easily. The SJ-18 i bought from a GJ member the other day actually so yall have seen it.

hiball - thye rod with the 90 degree bend is the plunger return rod on the left hand side of the jack. im talking about the return rod on the other side which attaches with a clevis and pin through a hole on the pedal bottom. but since mine is missing - i refer to the parts diagram which shows a rod w clevis on one end but nothing on the other.

Hiball IS the man, always helpful advice.

Nice collection of jacks. If you get a chance, please post some more detailed pics of your Blackhawk units. Some of us here are goofy about these..:willy_nil

CR - ya i know - i finally joined the goofy for blackhawks club a few weeks ago. just trying to find the parts will make you goofy. i found a place that had nos casters and maybe lenses (and other switch parts possibly) the other day. i will share with everyone right after i see if they can fill my "parts that might break 30 yrs from now" order.

heres the early blackhawk without swivel casters i mentioned in the beginning of my post. its 6 hrs or so from me but he wanted $125 for it and the oil dispenser and said he had the jack rebuilt in 65 and it works fine - no leakdown - so i bought them and when i get them ill post better pics. recognize it? i think the colors are original.

I'm definitely interested in your parts source if they have any lenses or switch parts available for an S-4.

That sweet little jack with the fixed rear wheels is a late 30's or early 40's, 1.5 Ton S-7. It has steel cast side frames with similar art deco lines as your S-4.

I'll post an old catalog pic of an S-7 for you a little later.

CR - i knew u would know which one it was. thanks for taking the time to post the ad - those are invaluable as well as cool as hell - i guess i collect vintage ads too.

i still havent seen a pic of these missing parts for the weaver but my order will be in on monday or tuesday so ill see them then.

on the parts source - they did/do have switch parts - no lenses though. I bought 2 rear casters, 2 return springs, a few switch parts and shes holding a knob for me which i dont need but am trying to think of what will break 30 yrs from now.

I never ever share my parts sources but because i dont want to be too obvious a hoarder - here it is -u probably know it anyway - Tri City Hydraulic Jack Repair in florida somewhere. Just having the caster assemblies was HUGE - those are really hard to find and im a seasoned parts bloodhound.

maybe you can help me - i am now again looking for an SJ18. The one i bought from a garagejournal member - fedxd the money up to him - sent a truck to pick it up - he totally screwed me on bc i was upset he couldnt meet my driver after trying to coordinate with him all week to no avail.

can u find me a decent sj18?

Thanks for listing your parts source. I have heard of them, but have not had any dealing with them since most of the parts I have needed have been fabricated or have come from a donor jack.

Sorry to hear about your dealings with the GJ member. I'm pretty sure I know this individual out of the SF area in CA. He seemed to be a pretty straight shooter with me. I made him aware of that jack and a couple of others about a year ago.

There are three of four other members here that I can think of that have an SJ-18. Do some searching here and you will probably find them. Perhaps for the right price, you might be able to pry one away from them.

PM sent..

Nice jacks....I'm looking for a hydraulic cover for a Blackhawk S4. I havent bought the jack yet, as I dont want it if I can't find a cover first...

I may check with that place in Florida for the cover....

I've got a constant eye everyday on Craigslist, but havent seen anything else yet...

I just gave Tri City Hydraulic Jack Repair a call. They didnt have a cover either...I asked about other S4 parts, and she referenced texasgladiator57 just buying those casters.

The search continues. I'd love to find a complete jack and not have to worry about finding a cover plate for this local S4 that has been for sale for almost 3 months now for $200.

Edit: Wow, talk about service, I just got a call back from Linda at Tri City and she said she found 2 covers that they have. She gave me a price, so I guess I'll be going to look at this jack tonight and hopefully make a deal...

Make sure that the jack doesn't have any other missing hard parts or you'll be going through the same routine trying to source what you need.

Please post up some pics if you get it.....Good Luck!!

Yea, I want to check it out in person first, before I do anything else...I think its still got the light portion on it...

Here's the CL ad: http://oklahomacity.craigslist.org/tls/2770806746.html

I just talked to the guy, he wants me to come tomorrow because the weather is bad right now. He says he's firm at $200. I really dont want to pay $200, plus have to buy the cover. He says he's had lots of interest, but no one has come up with the money yet. I also asked if anyone had actually came to look at it yet, and he said no, just people on the phone...

I want to give $100 for it, but doubt he'll go for it. I'm gonna take cash with me tomorrow and try to make a deal...

Curious.. How much did your source charge for the cover?

Steven

They said $65. I'd like to get the jack for no more than $135 so I'm in it about $200 before I start restoring it....I feel like its probably worth $200 if its working, but I guess its just my cheap side coming out...

Nah... You need to careful when buying obsolete tools, you always need to factor in the replacement costs along with just the costs associated with making it operational.
