I know this has been covered before. I've searched through the threads, but can't find the info I'm looking for.

I have a weaver jack, that after consulting with company, we have decide was built in the 1930's. I ordered and have the rebuild kit. I have been able to remove the handle end, but I can't seem to figure out how to remove the lift end.

By the way, I got this after my father in law passed away a few months ago. I was searching the remains of a shed that had been recovered by nature, and found this thing buried in dirt, under a couple of car hoods and an old steel desk.

I responded to your email, but for the sake of the community I’ll follow up.

Generally on the side of the Hydraulic unit there are some guides that fit into dogs inside the frame rails. You simply unhook the pump linkages, release connections, pull he cotter pins (if utilized) on the slides and where the ram connects to the lift arm linkage. Slide it forward to clear the dogs and pull it straight up. Installation is reverse order.

Thanks for the reply hiball! That is how the the handle end removed, but the other end is not like this. I can see where there is a pin (1" diameter) at the other end where it connects to the lift arm. I can see where there is a cotter key in it and when removed the pin slides BUT, there isn't enough room to slide the pin out! And I can't get to move out of the frame sides to allow it...

I can’t remember ever removing a handle, I suppose for transporting needs, definitely not for removing the Hydraulic unit. Did you remove the two cotter pins where it connects to the frame rails dogs? There a couple inches behind the rear casters, one each side.

Yes sir, that is what released the handle end of the hydraulic unit. It's the other end I can't get undone.

I’ve re-read your reply, is the ram out of the assembly? If not that is what is holding you up, but raising the lift arm will definitely give you the room to clear those pins, but you still need to get the ram out of the lift assembly to remove the unit. It’s Been a long day, based of the pictures this series needs to go forward to clear the pins in the frame. I keep saying forward/backwards... lets go with the correct answer, FORWARD.. that’s what the cotter keys are for, to prevent the unit from sliding forward during use/someone pulling up on the lift arm.

I will look at it again this afternoon after work... last night I was trying to pick up the lift arm and it would allow that pin are to drop down a little bit. But the reservoir was in the way of it coming down far enough.... I'll try again tonight and I'll take some pictures too. Thanks hiball!!

As you can see, one end is able to come out past the "dogs" you were talk9ng about.

The other end, is the end that has the pin thru it with the cotter key

After reading moondoggy’s thread again, I noticed in one of the pictures some things that helped prod me in the right direction I think....

Broke out the persuaders:

Finally got it out:

Tomorrow I’ll pressure wash and go from there! Thanks again hiball, I’m sure I’ll have some more questions, and I really appreciate you’re help!

Was gonna pressure wash today, but realized I needed to remove the wheels and castors.... castor bearings were shredded, pretty much non existent. The front wheels actually have pieces of steel rod layered around the shaft as the “bearing”....

Started to tear down the hydraulic unit, but I can’t get one of the parts off. I need a bigger pipe wrench so I ordered one .... now my project is on hold until next week.

This weekend I decided to mount a massive vise I got out of my FIL’s garage...

c7arKrz.jpg

Got it mounted and that thing is a beast. Anyways, I borrowed a large pipe wrench from a buddy (cancelled my order on the other one..) and I was able to get the hydraulic unit opened finally!!!

Here is the wrench and the piston finally removed:

Here is the jack frame next to the bike for a size reference:

Here is the hydraulic unit opened and draining, note the sludge and **** that came out:

Here it is set up for the night to finish draining:

Tomorrow after work I plan on cleaning the cylinder out with mineral spirits and hopefully get further along on my rebuild!

Finished rebuilding both ends of the unit today. Filled with fresh fluid and plunged the unit flushing the system, then drained.... rebuilt the ball valve and the needle valve as well as reset the needle valve:

Put it back into the jack body tonight....

Tomorrow I’ll pick up some more hydraulic jack oil and fill er up. Then I’ll have to put it back together and try it out!

So, I had to get the two ends back together with 2 stout springs keeping them apart..... hmmmmmm... redneck engineering to the rescue:

NxVSe2f.jpg

Once back together, I filled the cylinder reservoir with fresh oil. Bled the system and it lifted! It’s slow, but at its age I’m just happy it’s working!! (TWHS!)

p8kKcae.jpg

Measured the height and left it until tomorrow, if it doesn’t move then I’ll order the bearings for the rear wheels and finish this thing up!

I forgot to mention... I put an ammo can with about 35 lbs of steel chain in on the arm providing down pressure..... we’ll re measure tomorrow

What a great remembrance for him.
Looking forward to the rest of your repair.

Thank you, and very cool jack! If you call the weaver company (number on their website) and give them the numbers then they can tell you all about you particular jack....

After it sitting all weekend I’m confident that it’s good to go. The only problem I can see is pumping it up. First pump raises the saddle about an inch, if you immediately pump again it raises maybe an eighth to a quarter of an inch. But if you wait about 30 seconds between strokes it raises that inch at a time again. It’s okay though, I’m not in a hurry!

This week I’ll order the bearings for the castor wheels and get bearing grease. Hopefully get this thing back in fighting shape!

When you cleaned the hydraulic unit did you clean the pump line? Pull the cap with the Magnet/filter in it?

I followed the instructions that came with the kit... I opened everything that could be opened except for a small copper tube that ran between the ends. That’s probably the part you’re talking about. I never saw any magnet/filters though... I pulled the balls out with the weight, cleaned/replaced. Pulled out the needle and cleaned etc etc...

Do I need to drain it and try to get the tube off and cleaned out? Is it something where I can clean it out without draining the entire system?

It’s possible due too it’s age that it doesn’t have neither, I suppose. On the bottom side of the Hydraulic unit, directly behind where the copper line connects there should be Either a freeze plug or a valve cap. If so, Did you pull that cap?

I reviewed the pictures, looks like it’s a plug.

No I didn’t..... do I need to drain the unit again to open that up as well as remove the copper tube?

It might be possible to turn it on its side and contain some of the oil, maybe elevate the pump end to persuade oil away from you. It's up to you on copper tube, I would... But maybe decide after you see what's going on under that plug.

Ok. So I ended up just draining it and removing it from the frame again. I opened the plug and there was a small chunk of crud blocking off the hole where the copper tube entered. There was a metal screen below it that was mostly occluded with gunk. Cleaned it all up, blew out the copper tube with the air compressor and ran pipe cleaners thru the ports in there. All back together and refilled and bled.....

Thanks again hiball!! Thank you for your help and giving of your time and knowledge... now I’ll be able to use this for years to come and hand it down to my son one day. Thanks again!

The bearings for the rear casters arrived today. I got them installed, didn’t take any pics... had to “rebuild” the needle bearings in the front wheel. They are a primitive needle bearing style, I had to grease the inside of the wheel before reinstalling the steel rods then after that I greased the inside as well as the shaft:

So, now she’s back on the floor and ready to work another six decades!

Does anyone have an ideal on where I might sell a weaver jack. Needs restored. It does go up and down. Also it's a monster of a jack.

Fishingfoolemjak, please post some pictures

Hammer1, create a separate thread for your jack. It looks interesting. It's similar to mine but appears heavier. If anybody you know or yourself ever travels to MA, let me know and text me the price. Well worth saving. Thank you

If you look through the thread, you will see pics of my weaver jack. I’m happy to report, it’s been a few years now and the Jack still gets used regularly. We’ve since finished remodeling the house we inherited and we’ve moved in. I’ve used the jack for working on trucks, mowers and tractors!
