Just got a beautiful old Weaver shop press. Good shape almost completely original. Restoring but can’t get the casing with the spindle/spindle cylinder and wheel assembly apart???? Anyone familiar or have any experience dismantling one of these?? Any suggestions appreciated. I have already downloaded parts sheet and patent pictures off Castle web site.

I have more questions than answers.
https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=447356

What have you tried??

The video in your other thread it doesn't look too complicated.

Do you have any still close up pictures??

If you help us with more information it will be easier to help you. It's not going to be something a bunch of people have worked on before, but might be close to something someone has experience with.

Make a few more post on the thread so you can post pictures.

That is a cool looking press.

A lot of parts were assembled back in the day with solid tapered pins which were hand-reamed and trimmed flush, etc.

Something like that could be hiding under the paint. Its usually a good idea to compare the two end diameters with a caliper before spending half a day beating on the wrong end & making it tighter.

These gear teeth are on the inner cylinder allowing the press additional 5-6 inches of throw (torque). I can’t budge it up or down. Seems it should just slide out?

I believe thats the rack of the arbor press operation. The handle that operates the arbor willbe connected to the pinion, somehow, someway u gotta remove the pinion and the rack should come out? I didn't have to take mine apart so don't know exactly. Ur right about that area, it is complicated. Looks unbroke and complete, good find.

edit, rereading u say its stuck where its at? If so, its gotta be in the pinion... broke tooth, bolt, FOD. CAUTION, Look at my vid and see which way i swing the arbor press handle to retract, go somewhat warload on it. May break something though!

8pm edit, I'll try to get my arbor press stuck like that tomorrow.

Forgive my naivety with terminology. Spindle is in the rack and pinion correct? All that is in the casing. The rack and pinion was stuck in the down position, as shown in the pics. I was able to tap it back into the casing enough to get the teeth engaged with the lever and Shazam it’s back to its normal position. Thank you Jesus. But I still don’t know how to disassemble??

I agree with wrenchguy, if the teeth on the straight rack end, then the rack/arbor can't be withdrawn straight up or down the casing or it will jam like you just found.

So, somehow the pinion (the little gear attached to the arm) has to be removed first, whether it can slide out the side or has its own housing that can be removed is not clear.

I appreciate the pics but they are very small, not sure where you are hosting pics but do you have a "large" size option that you can post?

The pinion is out. I can easily remove and replace. I was able to tap the rack in so I could engage the pinion enough to completely retract the rack. I sprayed the hell out of it with WD40, and it moves smoothly. So it’s not the pinion holding up the rack. Even if I completely remove the pinion the rack does not come out of the casing?

The casing is the rack. The pinion raises/lowers the rack engaging the rack teeth.

The handwheel screw is in the rack and not part of the arbor press operation.

The handwheel screw combination is used when the arbor press won't push. It's lighter duty.

I don't know how to remove press screw or the rack, but if i was sand blasting the unit i'd somehow-someway not mess with the screw. Mask off the rack, its not painted anyway.

Good luck with ur project.

I have one like it I can't get loose either. You have any luck yet? I also need the arm that goes to ratchet the wheel. I would get it now because someday I'll get it free and need the piece
