Hi all:
First off, I want to thank you all who share your building stories. It is immensely helpful and encouraging. I've been lurking here for a while and now I'm coming to you all for your wisdom.

I'm thinking of a 40 x 60 x 12 barn/garage ("barrage"), big enough for a garage, workshop, and indoor play area (i.e., basketball court). To have a
vaulted ceiling it will really need to have metal trusses, such as Adam's Truss,
or Perka. It will also need to be well insulated to be useful in the winters here
in central NY and not have condensation. My thought is to use SIPs for the
roof over the web metal trusses. I have not read here if anyone has done this.

Does anyone have experience with this? Thoughts?

Thanks in advance,

Jeff in Enfield, NY

I haven't done it, but I do not see why it wouldn't work.

I have seen those trusses used from everything from chicken houses to semi garages to hay sheds.
Roofs have been from tin sheets to plywood and shingles.
Walls from concrete block to tarps to hay bales.
When you take away the structural worries the imagination can kind of go wild.

We have a SIP building at work and it has a steel skeleton with SIP roof and walls. The roofing is standing seam metal cool roof one large roll up and one pedestrian door.
It's a great building that stays cool in the summer ( it gets hot here ) and dosent get too cold in the winter. There is no heating or cooling in the building

Thanks gents for the help. I've looked at 64 metals, but the pitch on the trusses
is too flat and the lower chord is too low. This does not give enough ceiling height unless
the walls are really tall.

SIPs are expensive and my thought is too only use them on the roof. Have a contractor
erect the steel frame and install the roof SIPs and metal roofing. I'll finish the wall
framing, siding, and conventional insulation. The less I'm working on the roof, the better!
