So after a year of checking craigs i finally picked up a sweet weber summit off craigs i couldn't refuse. It's replacing my 10+ year old genesis...I bet I could have gotten 10 more years out of the genesis but i've painted it once and the burners need a bit of coaxing and with a bigger family now i was looking for more burners. 10+ years on the coast and florida air with original burners and used every other night, ..i trust the webers. Only thing i ever did was put some cast iron grates in and change an ignitor (besides a cleanup/frame respray).
All the stainless and porcelian cleaned right up. But the frame and back of the stainless doors on these is what rusts as that's all painted steel. This one is not bad as it's one of the newer models but it definently wasn't cared for and there's a noticable bit of rust in lots of places setting in. While I'm cleaning the whole thing I'm considering stripping it apart and tackling this now as I'm sure i'll be keeping it at least as long as my other one.
I know high temp grill paint works well on the lower frame, but when i redid the genesis it didn't seem to hold out to well on the upper frame that touches the cookbox. Also this sucker gets a lot hotter than my old two burner.
I know of:
* standard high temp grill paint
* the ceramic spray can stuff (vht i think?) seems decent, i've used it on outboards parts, not sure about high heat like grills though.
Any other options? I'd prefer something I could put in a gun and shoot the panels with as it's all enclosed and pretty visable.
Does 2k paint hold up to high heat? I've got some dtm hok kd2000 left over i'm looking to use on something, then could get some color from the paint store but i know nothing about if it holds up to heat.
Or maybe powder coating but may be pricy with all the panels...I dunno, I may check into that if not go VHT route unless someone has done something besides regular rattlecan high temp and has suggestions.
