Coincedentlly they are made by the same company, Husqvarna or HOP. Going back about 25 yrs ago Homelite use to be a good product. When Husqvarna acquired the brand they turned it into trash.
Check your source of information.

Homelite is owned by TTI, the same company that owns Milwaukee tools.

Husqvarna has nothing to do with Homelite. Previous owners of the Homelite brand include John Deere, and before that, Textron.

It’s pretty much a gamble, small two stroke engines have a pretty limited lifespan and besides the head it’s difficult to tell when parts are worn or soon to fail. Not a bad idea if it’s going to be rarely used but if it’s gonna be weekly like edging after you cut the lawn you’re best off going new, the small amount of money saved isn’t worth the hassle of it not working when you need it. You’ll get similar results from echo, stihl or husqvarna

Weed Eater is a brand.

It's like asking what brand Stihl is the best?
Been thinking of making a thread for this actually, curious if it’s regional since I’ve never heard anyone in person call it anything but a weedwhacker, but online I’ve heard weedeater, string trimmer among others, the latter would be the proper generic name I’m assuming

If you come across any the 4 stroke husqvarnas might be worth a look, I have a couple and they’ve been awesome. Made by Husqvarna but if you look close it’s actually a Honda motor, at least the ones I have. (324L)

Semantics.

I’ll call them whippersnippers then, as my bud across the pond then LMAO.

I did stop in the local mower supply place to get a ground drive belt for the junk Ariens mower, and an inner tube for a mower I sold. The tire was going flat after a couple weeks, but I loaded it up, delivered it to his house (Vietnam Vet) and the tire was low already. So I bought an inner tube and am gonna install it when the mulch plate for it comes in (didn’t expect to sell the mower that fast. Usually I list something and it takes a couple weeks to sell).

Anyway, the mower place sells Honda whippersnippers. $349.99 is the cheapest one. Not “in” the budget, but not “out” of it either if it’s a decent whippersnipper.

I've grown to despise, loathe, and detest anything and everything 2-cycle, not just the assorted MTD garbage peddled under 101 brand names.

I would not even buy a "major" brand used, but if you must make sure you see it start and run well first, and don't expect much.
Most MTD and similar brands are made to last only a season or two. They have an annoying habit of changing part designs, so finding replacement parts isn't easy. Their stuff is essentially disposable, which is a terrible way to run a business. There's a reason they got bought out by SBD.

In my opinion, Brushless/Lithium powered makes more sense for homeowners. Instant starts, no fuel to mix or store, no exhaust, no fumes, and generally quieter. They also seem to be a little easier to maneuver, which is a big plus with inclined terrain, etc.

I bought a Ryobi 4 stroke weed wacker for 2 mostly wooded acres back in 2010. Paid $90/ 50% off as it was a refurb. Never had an issue with it. Very quiet and sipped gas. Last year decided it was starting to get tired and began shopping for a replacement. Found the identical model was still available from Ryobi and bought another refurb for $90.

It's been a great weed wacker for me.

Absolutely avoid Ryobi gas powered anything. I've had great luck with used Husqvarna weed wackers, blowers, and chainsaws.
on the contrary I bought a used one (model 430) for $30 and it worked like a charm
So well in fact that both sons bought same.
