I went to a car show here in Michigan on Staurday and picked up a mid 50's Walker service jack for 40 bucks. I came home and went to a garage sale and bought a 1950's milwaukee bench top drill press for 20 bucks. Then the mailman brought me my brand new 1/2 inch drive polished cman ratchet I bought off ebay for 10 bucks shipped:

I went to the same estate sale in Redford three times. Guy was a mechanic and had a two car garage that was also two cars deep. He had it packed with stuff he'd removed from old cars he'd worked on. There were hundreds of coffe cans filled with every nut, bolt, wire looms, grommets, push rods, lifters, oil pan bolts, .... he even had a coffee can full of distributor hold-down brackets. First day (during lunch) went through and picked up a Craftsman 2 drawer center box and several SnapOn pullers - not sure what they're exactly for, need to look up the part numbers. Went back after work and found a Blue Point halazone tester, another couple of speciality pullers and couple of Mac wrenchs. Saturday was the last day and they were having a bag-sale, thats where it's a set price for everyting you can fit in the bag, this one was $10 a bag. I hit the coffe cans and spent over an hour going through them. I brought my plunder home and laid it out to sort and my wife comes out, sees the mess and says "you've lost your mind" and goes back in the house. Most unusual find was a coffee can with about 2 dozen oil drain plugs, don't know why but I brought them home. One of the coolest can was filled with those flat fender clips that are threaaded on one side, brought those home too.

Yeah, I was bummed I didn't get there until it was almost over on Saturday. I was at Billetproof in Davisburg until 3:00 and when I got home My wife told me about it. I am still geeked about the drill press, it's got 20 bucks in scrap weight alone but it works great.

All I got was a stack of old "family handyman" magazines and a book on welding for a buck. The guy had an old craftsman 10" table saw for $95 but needed a new motor that he'd had priced at $200. My wife would have killed me for spending a hundred bucks that I couldn't even start up when I got home....

I picked up:

Five nice 3/8" drive ratchets- 3- SK, 1- Proto Challenger, 1- New Britain

One very sweet Indestro 1/2" drive round head ratchet. One import 1/2" ratchet.

Around 75- 1/2" and 3/8" drive sockets -mostly USA made -SK, Action, Wizard, Proto, OTC, Bonney, Husky, New Britain, Fleet, Walden, etc... Plus a couple of USA made Socket drive adaptors.

All for $11.00

Another lot I bought contained about 50 wrenches 1/2 imports 1/2 USA (same brands as above). Around 20 Pairs of pliers- quite old, but some very nice ones including Krauter, Utica, Barcalo, Diamond, Snap-on, Boker and some German ones that look like old VW tool kit pliers. Four old "Antique" adjustable Wrenches Including a nice King **** Spanner like this one:

A very unusual old German made self adjusting ratcheting pipe wrench marked "PLATTINA".
Plus a broken Craftsman "vice grip" style locking pliers and a 1/2" Craftsman beam style torque wrench with a severely cracked handle that were cheerfully exchanged for new ones at Sears. -All for $25

I also got the "Worlds Ugliest" 26" six drawer Craftsman top chest for five bucks. It has a good sized patch welded in one corner and there was so much surface rust that I just could not leave the "patina" after I cleaned it up. I hit it with some Aluminum colored spray paint I had around and now it holds my hole-saws, drill bits, files, Taps & Dies and snips. It is still kind of cheesy looking with the silver paint on it but the drawers all work ok.

Went to Costco on Saturday and found a Craftsman adjustable wrench in the parking lot.

I now own 7 adjustable 'Crescent' wrenches, and I only paid for one of them!

At yard sales or what?

It started out as an EBay sale. But before I went to pay I checked out the seller’s web site and realized she was only about four miles away. I emailed her and she called me about 5 minutes later. She said she had more tools that were not listed yet so I drove right over. After the stuff in her auction went for a song (very poorly listed) she was very happy to get what I offered her for the rest of it.

The real icing on the cake was that when I went to Sears to warranty the pliers and the Torque wrench they had an open box Craftsman Professional advance timing light that had been on the clearance shelf for so long that it was marked down to $23.00 I was going to buy one anyway to check the spark advance on my wife's Jetta that just failed the state emissions test. Its one thing to get a great deal on something you want, but to get the tool that you need right now cheap is truly rare.

Well I didn't get any great deal on anything to brag about but I did buy a rachet Saturday night at Home Depot. They had the Husky 3/8 rachet with the grip that you can twist to turn the socket on sale for $19.99 regular price is $29.99.

I run into situations where you can barley turn a 70 tooth rachet and you can't turn the fastener by hand so I thought for the price I'd give it a try.

The rachet is Massive to say the least. The head on it is thicker than most 1/2" drive rachets which might hinder you from getting the rachet and socket in some places where this type rachet would really be valuable. The screwdriver grip is quite comfortable and the fit, and finish is good. It seems that in some instances this rachet could be very useful.

If it doesn't work out as a useful rachet it would make a great Billy Club. It's big and heavy and the grip is easy to hang on to! hahahahaha

I bought the 1/2" drive husky ratchet with the double flex joints in it and was very impressed with the quality. It too was a 20 dollar piece.
